Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Maike Bertens Deckart notched 15 kills and hit at a .393 clip and junior Abby Johnson added 10 kills for Bradley Volleyball, but Miami (Ohio) jumped out an early lead in the fifth set and went on to top the Braves 25-21, 24-26, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9 Saturday morning to start day two of the 2022 CEFCU Invitational.

Senior Serena Sparks led Bradley's (0-2 overall) defensive efforts with 19 digs and was one of four Braves in double figures in digs in the contest.  Junior Loren Scott added her first career double-double, finishing with career highs of 24 assists and 11 digs in the setback.

In the opening set, Bradley led 16-15 after a Karagan Coggin ace, only to have Miami (1-2 overall) answer with a 6-1 spurt to take a 23-17 lead.  The Redhawks went on to take the first set 25-21.

The second set went back and forth, featuring 11 ties and five lead changes before a late push by Bradley.  Trailing 23-20, Bradley got a kill from Johnson to spark a three-point spurt and back-to-back Redhawk errors knotted things at 23-23.  Miami had set point at 24-23 when Coggin answered with one of her four second-set kills to pull Bradley even at 24-24.  A Jasmine Green ace gave Bradley set point (25-24) and the duo of Coggin and Doga Topcicek combined for a block to seal a 26-24 BU second-set win to even the match.

Miami hit .308 in the third set and took the frame 25-18 to go up two sets to one, only to have Bradley bounce back with its best offensive set in the fourth.  The Braves hit .320 in the fourth set and were able to force a deciding fifth set with a 25-23 victory.  Miami led by as many as four points in the fourth (19-15) before Bradley rallied.  Bertens Deckart had a block and ace to help spark the spurt.  The Braves eventually pulled even at 21-21 on a Green kill.  With the score knotted at 23-23, Coggin gave BU a 24-23 lead with a kill and a Miami attack error gave Bradley the set 25-23.

In the fifth set, Miami jumped out to a 7-1 lead and the Redhawk advantage never dipped below four down the stretch as Bradley fell 15-9 in the deciding set.

The 2022 CEFCU Invitational concludes this afternoon with #21 Western Kentucky taking on Kansas City at 1 p.m. and the Braves returning to the court for a 6 p.m. contest against Kansas City.
