Maike Bertens Named Bradley Busey Bank Scholar-Athlete Of The Week

PEORIA, Ill. – Junior outside hitter Maike Bertens Deckart (Santiago, Chile/Deutsche Schule Santiago/Iowa Western) has been named this week's Bradley Busey Bank Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced Wednesday after earning All-Tournament honors at the season-opening CEFCU Invitational.

Bertens Deckart led Bradley Volleyball in kills in two of her first three outings as a Brave and averaged a team-best 3.00 kills per set while attacking at a .372 clip in three outings. She notched a team-best 15 kills and hit .393 with two digs, two blocks and an ace in a five-set outing against Miami (Ohio) Saturday. Bertens Deckart chased that with a season and match-high 19 kills, four digs and one block to help Bradley rally from a 2-0 deficit for a five-set victory against Kansas City later that day. After Bradley dropped the opening two sets to a Kansas City squad that won 21 matches last year, Bertens Deckart averaged 5.00 kills per set and hit .462 in the final three frames to help the Braves rally from a 2-0 deficit to win a match for the first time since 2018. An organizational communications major, Bertens Deckart owns a 4.00 cumulative grade point average.

Each week, a student-athlete is selected as the Bradley Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in academic standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.

Bertens Deckart and the Braves return to action this weekend at the Reamer Club Xtra Special in West Lafayette, Ind., where Bradley opens tournament play Friday with a 9 a.m. match against tournament-host and 11th-ranked Purdue.
