Game Recap: Volleyball |
ATHENS, Ohio – Bradley Volleyball had its highest block total in six years and used a balanced attack to top Tennessee Tech in five sets Saturday morning by the scores of 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 18-25, 15-11 to wrap up action at the Bobcat Invitational.

Six Braves had seven or more kills with juniors Abby Johnson and Doga Topcicek tying for team-high honors with 10 kills.

Freshman Kendall Minta added eight kills and led Bradley's (3-6 overall) defensive efforts at the net with a season-best 11 blocks as she helped Bradley collect 15 blocks in the contest.  BU's 15 team blocks were the most for the Braves dating back to the 2016 season opener at Milwaukee and Minta's 11 blocks were the most by a Bradley individual since Kaitlyn Comiskey had 11 blocks against SIU Edwardsville on Sept. 5, 2008.

Fellow freshman Kaitlynn Peterson nearly collected her first career double-double, finishing with nine kills and tying for match-high honors with 18 digs.  Karagan Coggin added eight kills of her own and junior Maike Bertens Deckart finished with seven kills.

Minta highlighted the first set victory with three kills and seven blocks, while Kaitlynn added two kills and two blocks as the freshmen duo combined for 10.5 of Bradley's points in the set.  Nine of BU's 15 blocks on the day came in the opening set.

Bradley hit .438 in the second set and ran away with a 25-17 victory to go up two sets to none.  The Braves used a 7-1 spurt to close out the 25-17 win with Topcicek starting the run with a kill and ace.  Peterson added two kills and a block, while Minta had a kill and block of her own.  BU's 12th block of the match came from Coggin and Johnson to cap the 25-17 win.

In the third set, Bradley found itself trailing by as many as five points (17-12) before making a push.  A 7-2 spurt that included a pair of kills from Bertens Deckert helped the Braves pull even at 19-19.  Tennessee Tech went in front 23-21, only to have Bradley rally again.  Big kills from Topcicek and Johnson tied things up at 23-23, but a service error and bad set gave the set to Tennessee Tech 25-23.

Tennessee Tech raced out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth, but Bradley fought back to tie things up at 9-9 and led 10-9 after a Golden Eagles' error.  A 6-0 Tennessee Tech run put the Golden Eagles back in front 15-10, however.  Bradley got no closer than three down the stretch as Tennessee Tech forced a deciding fifth set with a 25-18 win.

Topcicek had two of her 10 kills in the fifth and Peterson served up a pair of aces to help Bradley take the deciding frame 15-11.  With Bradley leading 7-6, Peterson had both of her aces and Topcicek capped a 5-0 BU run with a kill to give the Braves a 12-6 advantage.  Tennessee Tech scored four straight to get back to within two at 12-10, before a Coggin kill pushed the advantage back to three.  The Golden Eagles had a kill to keep the deficit at two (13-11), but a Tennessee Tech service error gave Bradley match point (14-11) and Topcicek closed the 15-11 win with her 10th kill of the contest.

Bradley returns to Renaissance Coliseum next weekend, hosting the CEFCU Classic Friday and Saturday.  Action begins Friday morning with Western Michigan taking on St. Thomas at 10 a.m.  The Braves will face Western Michigan in a 6 p.m. contest Friday night.
