Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Six Braves had six or more kills and senior Serena Sparks matched a season-best with 19 digs, but Western Michigan topped Bradley Volleyball 22-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-20 Friday night at Renaissance Coliseum to conclude day one of the 2022 CEFCU Classic.

Sophomore Silan Demirkol nearly posted a double-double, finishing with a team-best nine kills and season-best 17 digs for Bradley (3-7 overall).  Juniors Maike Bertens and Abby Johnson each added eight kills, while freshman Kendall Minta chipped in with seven kills to go with her seven blocks.  Freshman Kaitlynn Peterson finished with six kills and eight digs.  In addition, senior setter Carlee Camlin notched her first double-double of the season and the 11th of her career with 20 assists and 13 digs.

Johnson and Demirkol helped power Bradley to a 25-22 first-set victory with both notching four kills in the opener.  Demikol had four kills on 10 swings with no errors to go with five digs in the first, while Johnson had four kills on seven attacks in addition to tallying three blocks in the frame.

Western Michigan (7-4 overall) led 16-14 when Bradley used a six-point run to go in front 20-16.  Johnson had two kills and two blocks during the run that was capped by a Demirkol ace.  The Broncos managed to pull within one at 22-21 only to have the Braves hold set point at 24-21 after a Bronco error and Demirkol kill.  With Bradley leading 24-22, Bertens closed out a 25-22 victory with a kill.

In the second set, Western Michigan led by as many as five points (15-10) before Bradley rallied.  The set featured 10 ties with the last coming at 22-22 on a Johnson kill.  Western Michigan went back in front on a BU service error, however, and held set point at 24-22 after a Bradley attack error.  Johnson, who had seven of her eight kills in the first two sets, kept the Braves hopes alive with a kill to make it 24-23 before Western Michigan's Maggie King had a kill as the Broncos evened the match with a 25-23 win.

Western Michigan used a 14-1 spurt to break open what was a one-point contest at 8-7 in the third set.  The Broncos powered to a 25-10 victory thanks in part to Anna Calcagno, who had five kills on five attacks in the third set.

Bradley led 10-9 in the fourth following a Demirkol kill, but Western Michigan answered with six straight to build a 15-10 advantage.  The Braves chipped away at the lead, pulling to within two points three times down the stretch with the last at 17-15.  The Western Michigan lead was 22-19 after a kill by Loren Scott, but back-to-back BU errors gave the Broncos match point and WMU would eventually take the fourth set 25-20 to claim the contest.

Earlier in the day, Western Michigan swept St. Thomas to start the CEFCU Classic and IUPUI won a four-set contest against St. Thomas.

The CEFCU Classic wraps up Saturday with three matches, starting with a 10 a.m. matchup between Bradley and St. Thomas at Renaissance Coliseum.  Western Michigan and IUPUI will square off at 2 p.m. before the Braves face IUPUI at 6 p.m.
