Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Karagan Coggin had 10 kills and six blocks to help lead a balanced Bradley attack as the Braves rattled off the final five points of the match to collect a 24-26, 25-13, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12 victory over St. Thomas Saturday morning at Renaissance Coliseum to start the second day of the 2022 CEFCU Classic.

Bradley (4-7 overall) found itself trailing 12-10 in the fifth set and out of timeouts when the Braves would rally for a 5-0 scoring spurt to take the match.  Coggin started the run with a kill and sophomore Silan Demirkol tied things up at 12-12 with one of her two aces in the contest.  St. Thomas (2-10) called timeout after Bradley forced an attack error as the Braves grabbed a 13-12 lead and Bradley forced two more St. Thomas errors out of the timeout to take the deciding set 15-12.

Coggin was one of seven Braves with six or more kills, finishing with a team-best 10 kills to go with an ace, four digs and six blocks (three solo).  Fellow senior Serena Sparks notched a season-best 22 digs, while Demirkol matched her career high with 20 digs in addition to tallying eight kills.

Sophomore Kaylenn Hunt came off the bench to play in the final four sets and had two of her season-best nine kills in the fifth set to help highlight the victory.

The first set went back and forth with the frame featuring 14 ties and four lead changes.  Bradley led for most of the stanza, but found itself trailing in the late stages 23-22 after a kill by St. Thomas libero Cattie Rutledge.  Freshman Kaitlynn Peterson, who finished with eight kills, tied things up at 23-23 with a kill only to have St. Thomas hold set point at 24-23 thanks to a BU error.  A St. Thomas error pulled Bradley even again at 24-24, but kills by Ava Wild and Ellie Dammann gave the Tommies the opener 26-24.

Bradley responded by dominating the second set.  The Braves hit .314 in the second and forced 10 St. Thomas errors as the Tommies hit -.047 in the frame.  Bradley broke things open with a five-point run that featured kills by Peterson, Demirkol, Hunt and freshman Kendall Minta as the Braves built a 19-11 advantage.  St. Thomas had back-to-back blocks, only to have Bradley answer with six straight points to take the set 25-13.  Peterson had four of her eight kills in the second-set victory.

The third set saw Bradley use a late push to take control.  With BU trailing 19-18, Coggin sparked a 5-0 Bradley run with a kill and later added a block as the Braves held a 23-19 edge.  St. Thomas managed to get back within one point at 23-22, but Bradley held set point (24-22) after a service error.  A kill by Lauren Galvin of St. Thomas made it a one-point contest at 24-23, before a UST service error sealed a 25-23 BU win.  Coggin had four kills on just seven swings and a pair of blocks in the third.

In the fourth set, Bradley jumped out to an early lead, racing out to an 11-5 advantage before a St. Thomas rally.   A 7-1 St. Thomas spurt pulled the Tommies even at 12-12.  St. Thomas, which hit .333 in the fourth, eventually built a four-point cushion at 19-15.  The Braves battled back to within one at 21-20 and again at 22-21.  Galvin, who earned a spot on the CEFCU Classic for St. Thomas, had back-to-back kills to give the Tommies set point (24-21), however, and a Lander Friederichs kill gave UST the set a 25-21 to force a deciding fifth frame.  Galvin paced St. Thomas with a match-high 19 kills.

Junior Loren Scott helped highlight the victory for the Braves with her third double-double of the year, collecting 23 assists and 11 digs.

The 2022 CEFCU Classic continues this afternoon with IUPUI facing Western Michigan today at 2 p.m. and Bradley closing out the tournament with a 6 p.m. match against IUPUI.
