Volleyball Falls In Five To IUPUI

PEORIA, Ill. -- After rallying for a five-set win earlier in the day, Bradley Volleyball came up just short in a five-game thriller to cap the 2022 CEFCU Classic with IUPUI upending the Braves 26-28, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 15-12 Saturday night at Renaissance Coliseum.

Bradley (4-8 overall) had three individuals in double figures in kills, paced by sophomore Silan Demirkol's 11 kills. Senior Karagan Coggin hit .320 and finished with 10 kills to go with four blocks, while junior Abby Johnson had 10 kills of her own. Freshman Kendall Minta notched eight kills on just 12 swings with no errors, hitting .667 for the night.

On the defensive side of things for the Braves, senior Serena Sparks collected a season-best 27 digs as she moved into 15th in school history in career digs, pushing her career dig total to 1,140.

In the opening set, Bradley trailed 23-21 when Demirkol and Coggin had back-to-back kills to knot the score at 23-23. The Braves fought off a pair of set points, first at 24-23 on a Coggin kill and again at 25-24 thanks to an IUPUI (6-6 overall) service error. Coggin gave the Braves set point (26-25) with an ace, only to have the Jaguars answer with a kill to force the 12th tie of the frame at 26-26. Junior Jasmine Green notched her fifth kill of the set to put Bradley back in front 27-26 and freshman Kaitlynn Peterson served up an ace to cap a 28-26 BU win.

IUPUI jumped out to an early lead in the second set and never trailed in the stanza as the Jaguars pulled even in the match with a 25-23 victory. IUPUI's biggest lead of the set came at 21-17, before Bradley came surging back. Demirkol had a kill to spark a three-point push and later on back-to-back kills from Green and Johnson tied things up at 23-23. IUPUI's Allie Pogue snapped the tie with a kill and a Jaguar block gave the visitors the set. Johnson had five kills on eight swings with no errors in the second for Bradley.

The Braves used a late surge in the third set to go up two sets to one. Bradley held a 21-19 edge when Demirkol chased an IUPUI error with an ace to give the Braves a 23-19 advantage. After a Millai Madison kill for IUPUI, Coggin found the floor with a kill of her own to give BU set point (24-20). A block solo from Peterson sealed the 25-20 win for the Braves.

Both teams traded runs in the third set, with Bradley holding its biggest lead of the frame at 18-15 after a block by Minta and Peterson. IUPUI answered with four straight points, however, to go in front 19-18. After a timeout, Bradley had kills from Maike Bertens and Demirkol to take a 20-19 lead only to have IUPUI rattle off six straight to take the set 25-20 and force a deciding fifth set.

The fifth set saw IUPUI break a 7-7 tie with a 4-1 spurt that included a pair of kills from Briana Brown. Bradley would claw back to within one at 13-12 with Minta and sophomore Kaylenn Hunt sandwiching kills around a block by Minta and Peterson. Pogue, who finished with 16 kills, put a stop to 3-0 BU run with a kill to give IUPUI set point (14-12) and Brown's 21st kill of the night gave the Jaguars the deciding set 15-12.

Earlier in the afternoon, Western Michigan swept IUPUI to claim the 2022 CEFCU Classic title.

Bradley will open Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend, kicking off a two-match road swing Friday, Sept. 23 at Indiana State.
