Game Recap: Volleyball |
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Junior Doga Topcicek finished one kill short of matching a career-best as she tallied 13 kills and 10 digs, while senior Karagan Coggin had a career-high five aces to go with eight kills, but defending Horizon League champion edged Bradley Volleyball in four sets 25-23, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21 to wrap up Friday's action for the Braves at Purdue's Reamer Club Xtra Special.

Topcicek attacked at a .321 clip, finishing with a season-best 13 kills and 10 digs for her fourth career double-double to lead Bradley (1-4 overall).  Coggin served up five of Bradley's season-high nine aces and also added eight kills in the setback.

Milwaukee (1-4 overall) pulled out a 25-23 victory in the first set, despite Bradley getting six kills on just eight swings from Topcicek.  Neither team led by more than three points during an opening set which featured 14 ties and three lead changes.  Topcicek recorded each of Bradley's last three points in the set with kills, as her sixth kill of the first set pulled Bradley even at 23-23.  A BU service error put Milwaukee in front, however, and a Bradley attack error gave the Panthers the 25-23 win.

The Braves answered with a 25-22 second-set win to even the match.  Topcicek, who added three more kills in the second, broke a 22-22 tie with a kill and Coggin followed with one of her five aces to give the Braves a 24-22 edge.  Freshman Kendall Minta and junior Maike Bertens Deckart, who had eight kills of her own in the match, combined for a block to seal the 25-22 BU victory.

In the third set, Milwaukee broke things open with a six-point run to push an 11-10 lead to 17-10.  The Panthers hit .346 in the third set and claimed the frame 25-16 to go up two sets to one.

Bradley jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the fourth behind a kill, block and ace by freshman Kaitlynn Peterson.  Milwaukee chipped away at the BU advantage, however, eventually pulling even at 11-11.  With the Panthers holding a 23-21 lead, Madi Malone gave Milwaukee match point at 24-21 with her 13th kill on the contest and Natalie Schmitz followed with a kill of her own as Milwaukee claimed the fourth set 25-21 to take the match in four sets.

Bradley closes out action at the Reamer Club Xtra Special Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Utah.
