Game Recap: Volleyball |
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Junior Doga Topcicek recorded a season-best 14 kills and fell one dig short of her fifth career double-double as Bradley Volleyball fell in four sets at Evansville, dropping a 18-25, 14-25, 27-25, 21-25 decision to the Purple Aces Saturday at the Meeks Family Field House.

Topcicek matched a career-high with 14 kills and added nine digs in the setback as Bradley fell to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in MVC play.  Evansville was paced by Giulia Cardona, who had a match-high 23 kills, and Alondra Vazquez, who added 17 kills, as the Purple Aces improved to 5-11 overall and 2-0 in Valley play.

Evansville hit .348 in the opening set and never trailed with Purple Aces taking the first set 25-18.  With Bradley trailing 18-15, Evansville broke things open with a four-point spurt that included three consecutive aces from Maddie Hawkins.  Evansville served up five aces in the first with Kora Ruff capping a 25-18 UE victory with an ace.

Cardona had eight of her 23 kills in the second set to help highlight a 25-14 UE victory as the Aces hit .400 in the second.   Vazquez had a pair of blocks and a kill to help key a 4-0 Evansville spurt to give the Aces a 12-7 advantage.  Cardona had four of her eight second-set kills down the stretch to help Evansville take the frame 25-14.

Topcicek had five of her team-high 14 kills in the third set to highlight a 27-25 Bradley victory.  The Braves battled from behind most of the set, but used a 4-0 spurt to take a 17-14 lead after senior Karagan Coggin sandwiched a pair of aces around a Kendall Minta kill to highlight the run.  Bradley would have to use a late surge, however, to keep the match going.  Evansville rallied to hold match point at 24-23 on a Madisyn Steele kill, only to have Topcicek answer with a kill.  The teams traded side outs before Minta gave Bradley set point at 26-25 with a kill and junior Abby Johnson sealed a 27-25 BU victory with her seventh kill of the evening.

Evansville raced out to a 10-4 lead in the fourth and Bradley got no closer than three points down the stretch as the Aces closed out the match with a 25-21 victory.  Topcicek had five kills on just eight attacks without an error in the fourth, but Vazquez had six of her 17 kills on the night in the final set to help UE close out the match.

Bradley returns to action next weekend with the Braves hosting UIC Friday at 6 p.m. at Renaissance Coliseum.
