Game Recap: Volleyball |
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Playing its third match in six outings against a team that reached at least the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament, Bradley Volleyball fell to Pac-12 Conference foe Utah 25-21, 25-15, 25-19 to conclude action for the Braves at the Reamer Club Xtra Special Saturday.

Bradley (1-5 overall), which was playing without 2021 First-Team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection Karagan Coggin, was led by junior Abby Johnson and freshman Kendall Minta who each had seven kills.  Johnson added three blocks, while Minta tied for match-high honors with five blocks and hit at a .538 clip in the setback.

In the first set, Bradley kept things close throughout, with Utah (4-2 overall) getting some separation with a 6-1 spurt to take an 18-13 lead.  The Braves would rally, however, pulling within two at 23-21 to force a Utah timeout.  The Utes got a kill from Abby Kanch to hold set point and an Emily Smith kill gave Utah the opener 25-21.  Junior Maike Bertens Deckart had all four of her kills in the match in the opening frame.

Johnson notched four kills on four swings in the second set for Bradley, but Utah had its best offensive set of the contest and hit .333 as a team in the stanza.  An early five-point run gave the Utes an 11-4 lead, only to have the Braves pull within three at 14-11 later in the set on a Johnson kill.  Another five-point push by Utah extended the lead to eight (19-11) and the Utes claimed the second set by a score of 25-15.

Minta, who had three kills on three swings in the first two sets, collected four kills in the third to pace the Braves.  Bradley trailed by just two (20-18) late in the set when Utah made a push.  Four straight points gave the Utes match point at 24-18 and Allie Olsen capped a 25-19 Utah win with a kill.

Bradley continues a six-match road swing next weekend, heading to Athens, Ohio, for the Bobcat Invitational where the Braves will open tournament action Friday with a 9:30 a.m. (CT) contest against Loyola (Md.).
