Game Recap: Softball |
The Braves headed to Orlando for The Knights Classic, hosted by UCF, and found a tough test ahead of them.

In the first game of the tournament against Gardner-Webb, Bradley soared to a 10-2 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Katie Pederson got the scoring started for the Braves in the second inning with a massive home run to left field. Jordy van der Werf followed up with an RBI double to left, sending Bailey Sample home to score. The final three innings of the game were filled with more runs. In a bases loaded situation in the 5th, Kierston McCoy grounded out to second, but Lauren DeRolf went home to score, putting Bradley up 3-0. Sample sent a ball out to left center, allowing Badley and French to score from second and third. van der Werf once again brought in an RBI with a single to right. Headed into the 6th, the Braves led 6-0. DeRolf scored on a sac-fly from McCoy, but Gardner-Webb managed to get two runs back in the bottom of the inning. DeRolf, whose bat as been nothing short of hot since the start of the season, doubled down the left field line in the 7th inning, giving the Braves an 8-2 lead. The final runs of the game came from Grace French, who drove in DeRolf and van der Werf with a double to left center. Abbott Badgley picked up the win in the circle, throwing 5 1/3 innings. Badgley gave up six hits and two runs, one of which was earned. She struck out two and walked one. Camryn Schaller came in to finish the game, giving up one hit and striking out three.

Bradley would face Purdue in the second game of the tournament, ultimately falling 7-8 on a walk-off. The Braves once again opened the scoring. French reached first on an error by the second baseman, allowing Addie Welsh to score. Purdue would come back in the the third and put up five runs on the board, leaving Bradley to fight their way back. In the fourth, Sample singled to right center and advanced to second on an error, which allowed Allie Paregien to score. DeRolf stepped up again and singled to left, driving in Austin Comstock. A two-run home run from van der Werf gave the Braves a 6-5 lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Boilermakers once again evened the score in the sixth, leaving the game to be decided in the seventh. French, a veteran on the Bradley team, sent a ball over the wall in dead center and brought the lead back to 7-6. In the end, Purdue won on a walk-off single to center, leaving the game with a final score of 8-7. Three pitchers entered the circle for the Braves. French threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and six runs while walking one. Schaller was once again brought in, pitching 1 2/3 innings. Schaller gave up four hits and two runs and walked three. Hannah Organ was the final Bradley pitcher, giving up one hit.

The Braves opened up Saturday against Louisville. The Cardinals were strong both offensively and defensively, leaving Bradley with a fight ahead of them. French started in the circle and threw 3 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, six runs and two walks. Organ was brought into the circle to finish the game, allowing one hit and two runs while walking four. The Braves were blanked 0-8 in five innings.

Bradley would once again face Purdue on Saturday but ultimately fell 1-6. The lone run for the Braves came in the fourth inning when Pederson singled to right center and French scored. The final game of the weekend was an early morning matchup against Columbia. The Lions tallied up four runs in the first inning, and the Braves wouldn't get on the board until the third. DeRolf smacked a single through the left side, driving in Sample. French would then double to left center, moving DeRolf to third and sending Angela Cirone to home. Another RBI came from Badgley as she singled to third, and McCoy evened the game 4-4 after singling to the shortstop. Columbia would come back in the fifth and retake the lead 6-4. Bradley would get within one run after French was hit by a pitch to walk in a run, but the Braves ultimately lost 5-7.
