The Braves traveled down to Carbondale for a weekend series against Southern Illinois, taking two of the three games from the Salukis.
In the opening game on Friday, Bradley's bats were ready to go from the beginning. First inning singles from
Lauren DeRolf and
Austin Comstock brought
Abbott Badgley up to the plate. A groundball to the third baseman went through her legs, allowing DeRolf to score while Comstock moved to third, and the Braves took a 1-0 lead. Hits continued flowing from both sides, but neither team could score again until the fifth inning. A big double from
Ashley Breeding gave Bradley another chance to score, and
Kierston McCoy scored Breeding on a single to right field, extending the lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the fifth, the Salukis would come back with two runs of their own thanks to a home run. A quick turnaround came for Bradley as they scored two more runs in the top of the sixth.
Allie Paregien singled and
Jordy van der Werf walked, putting runners at first and second. Breeding stepped up to the plate once again and singled to right, allowing Paregien to score while
Angela Cirone, who was pinch running for van der Werf, moved to third. A bloop single to center from
Grace French put the Braves up by two runs once again after Cirone scored. The Salukis would try to make a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one run, but that would be all they could find. Bradley won the game 4-3, not trailing once. Breeding went 2-3 with a single and a double, one RBI and one run scored. French picked up the win in the circle, going for five innings before
Camryn Schaller came in to finish the game.
Bradley found itself trailing early in the second game of the series, being down 0-3 after the first inning. Always the fighters, the Braves didn't back down and mounted a comeback. Schaller got on base with a single up the middle, and she could come around to score on a home run from French later in the inning, bringing the Braves within one. SIU would get a run back in the bottom of the inning, keeping a 4-2 lead. Badgley would then double in the top of the fourth, putting herself in a scoring position while
Olivia Bradley came in to pinch run. Back-to-back walks then loaded the bases and prompted the Salukis to make a pitching change. Head Coach
Sarah Willis called in
Bailey Sample to pinch hit, and she didn't disappoint. Sample singled to third base, allowing Bradley and Welsh to score to tie the game. SIU took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Braves were still pushing for another win. With Comstock at first thanks to a single, Badgley came up to bat and reached on a throwing error, moving the runners to second and third. Breeding then singled to the pitcher, loading the bases.
Addie Welsh picked up an RBI on a single to left that scored Comstock and kept the bases loaded, also tying the game at five. The Braves would pick up the winning run on a walk, defeating SIU 6-5. Badgley was 3-4 in the game with a single, two doubles and one run scored. Sample went 1-1 with her pinch hit single and two RBIs. Schaller took the win, throwing a complete game with fives all across the board for hits, runs, walks and strikeouts.
The series finale would be another one-run game. Bradley once again scored in the first inning after French reached second on an error and scoring on a single from McCoy. The Braves wouldn't score again until the seventh inning, but SIU tallied three runs during that time and took the lead. Bradley's second run came off of a home run to left from van der Werf, but the Braves fell 2-3. French was given the loss, throwing a complete game, but she also tallied a single and one run scored. McCoy and van der Werf were both 1-3 with an RBI.
The Braves will head back on the road this weekend to face UIC.
