Peoria, Ill. – Bradley Women's Basketball opened their three-game road trip on Saturday by defeating the Indiana State Sycamores 85-75.
A Slow Start and Quick Recovery
The Braves came out firing to take a 6-2 lead just over two minutes into the opening quarter, but the Sycamores went on to score 15 of the next 18 points, including an 11-point run. Bradley finished out the quarter with two Kaylen Nelson three-pointers to bring the score to 17-15. Nelson's three free throws to open the second quarter gave Bradley the lead, and the two teams exchanged the lead for the next few minutes until the Braves went on an eight-point run just under three minutes into the quarter. The Sycamores attempted to come back, and despite bringing the score within one multiple times, Bradley took a 36-35 lead into halftime.
Standout Performances for Bradley
Nelson recorded her second 30-point game of the season, leading her team with 30 points and seven rebounds while adding two steals. Mya Wardle outdid her previous performance on Thursday, setting a new career high with 25 points while shooting 7-for-8 from distance and totaling four rebounds, four assists, and one steal with no turnovers. Tamia Perryman had a strong game, totaling 12 points, two steals, and one rebound. Maya Foz extended her double-digit scoring streak to 16, recording 12 points, two rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
Pulling Away for the Win
Bradley scored eight of the first 10 points to open the second half, but Indiana State continued to battle back, bringing the game to within two after a seven-point run midway through the third quarter. The Braves quickly responded with a six-point run of their own to reestablish that gap and carried that momentum to end the quarter with a 61-53 lead. The Sycamores scored the first four points in the final quarter, but Bradley once again responded with a six-point run to bring their lead to 10. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the game as Indiana State couldn't create any sustained pressure to fight back into this one, giving Bradley the 85-75 victory.
Defensive Notes
The Braves did a great job of limiting Indiana State's scoring opportunities, forcing them to shoot 25-for-64 from the field and 4-for-16 from beyond the arc. Both teams had more than 20 attempts from the charity stripe, and the Braves made good use of their opportunities, shooting 20-for-23 to put the pressure on the Sycamores. Despite being outrebounded 42-36, Bradley still held Indiana State to eight second-chance points while scoring nine of their own. The Braves also forced 12 turnovers and scored 12 points off those turnovers while only committing 10. Bradley took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Indiana State 25-18 while holding them to 4-for-14 from the field and 0-for-3 from beyond the arc.
