Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Lindsay Stalzer tallied a match-high 19 kills for Bradley, but Illinois State's Kelly Rikli stole the show recording 14 kills and 29 assists to lead Illinois State to a three game victory against the Braves in Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball action Saturday.
Bradley fell to 7-15 overall, 1-10 in the Valley losing 21-30, 20-30, 25-30. Illinois State improved its record to 15-6 overall, 8-3 in the Valley. The Redbirds used a solid defensive effort, posting a 52-40 edge in digs and nine service aces to the Braves one ace on the night. Illinois State hit .276, while Bradley hit owned a .123 hitting percentage on the night.
Illinois State held a slim 18-17 lead in game one, before the Redbirds blew the game open with a 12-4 run to win game one 30-21. Stalzer was the only Bradley player with more than one kill in the opening game, finishing with five. Rikli had three kills and 13 assists, while hitting .750 to help the Redbirds take game one.
Stalzer notched eight kills in game two, but Illinois State hit .400 for the game behind five kills from Savannah Knowles. The score was tied at 5-5, before a 12-3 Illinois State run capped by a Rikli kill gave the Redbirds a 17-8 lead. The Braves were unable to close the gap falling 30-20 in the second game.
Defense dominated game three as the two teams combined for 51 digs and neither team hit over .130. Illinois State's Paige White had 12 of her match-high 23 digs in the third game, helping the Redbirds to a 28-23 edge in digs in the game. Bradley held a 21-19 lead before attack errors led to the Braves downfall. Bradley had five attack errors during a 9-1 ISU run that put the Redibrds ahead 27-22. A pair of kills and an ace by Stalzer helped the Braves pull back to within three points at 28-25, before a service error and kill by Rikli sealed the victory for Illinois State.
Stalzer, who hit a team best .371 on the night, had a match-high 19 kills to up her career total to 1102. She also became the first player in the Valley this season to eclipse 400 kills and is currently leading the MVC with 401 kills. Sophomore Amber DeBroux added seven kills, while junior Ashley Vance nearly had another double-double finishing with 31 assists and nine digs.
Rikli, the Illinois State setter, finished with 14 kills, 29 assists and two aces while attacking at a .737 clip. She had 14 kills and no errors on 19 attacks. Savannah Knowles chipped in with 10 kills and nine digs.
Bradley returns to action Friday at league-leading Wichita State at 7 p.m. in Wichita State.
