PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Jen Brown scored a team-high 17 points to lead four Bradley players in double figures, as the Bradley Women's Basketball defeated Valparaiso 79-71 in double overtime Monday night at Robertson Memorial Field House. The Braves improved to 2-0 on the season, while Valpo fell to 1-1 on the year.
Brown collected eight points and all five of her steals in the first half, helping the Braves to a 31-24 lead at the break. Bradley led by seven points (51-44) with 9:44 to play in regulation, before the Crusaders went on an 11-2 run to take a two point lead (55-53) with just over six minutes remaining in the second half.
Freshman Kelly Krumwiede tied the game for the third time in the period with a basket with 5:28 left in the second half and sophomore guard Devyn Flanagan hit a jumper from the wing following a defensive stop to put the Braves up 57-55 with 3:47 on the clock.
Launa Hochstetler had a driving layup with 2:15 remaining to tie the game at 57-57, but freshman Skye Johnson answered with a layup on the other end as the shot clock wound down to put Bradley back on top (59-57) with 1:46 in the period. The Crusaders got a layup from Tamra Braun with 1:25 to go and Betsy Rietema gave Valparaiso a 61-59 lead with a basket with 38 seconds left in regulation.
Flanagan made a layup with 25 seconds left to tie the game for the sixth time in the half at 61-61. Valpo held for the final shot, but Lauren Bechtold's shot in the lane rimmed out and went out of bounds with four seconds on the clock. The Braves couldn't get a shot off at the other end of the floor, forcing the first overtime for Bradley since Jan. 4, 2003.
Bradley held a 69-65 lead with 2:01 left in the first overtime following a three-point play by Johnson, after she was fouled on a driving layup. Launa Hochstetler was fouled with 1:36 to play in the period and made both free throws and the Braves turned the ball over on the ensuing possession. Tamra Braun made a layup with 1:03 on the clock to knot the score at 69-69. Bradley had the final possession of the period with nine seconds to play but the Braves three-point attempt as time expired was off as the two teams went into double overtime.
Valparaiso ran out of gas in the second overtime, as the Crusaders made just 1-of-6 shots from the field and were outrebounded by the Braves 13-2 in the period. Johnson and Flanagan helped seal the win, combining for eight of Bradley's 10 points in the period to seal the 79-71 win.
The double overtime win was the first in a game that went at least two overtime periods since defeating Eastern Illinois 90-86 in triple overtime on Feb. 1, 1992. Brown, who hit a career-best four three-pointers, led four Bradley players in double figures with 17 points to go along with her five steals.
Flanagan and Johnson both added 15 points off the bench. Johnson hit 6-of-9 shots and added two blocked shots and two steals, while Flanagan 15 points and seven rebounds were both career highs. Junior Amy Peters was also in double figures with 11 points of 5-of-7 shooting, while senior Alex Liberatore led all players with a career-best 11 boards.
Valparaiso also had four players in double figures, led by Rietema's game-high 22 points. Tamra Braun had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Jamie Gutowski and Carrie Myers were also in double figures with 10 points each.
Bradley returns to action Friday at the Miami Thanksgiving Classic in Miami, Fla. The Braves face tournament host Miami (Fla.) at 6:05 p.m. (CST) and will play either Duquesne or Oakland during Saturday's action.
