PEKIN, Ill. -- Bradley continued its solid pitching from its season opener and scored eight runs in five innings, making quick work of Northern Illinois Saturday with an 8-0 five-inning victory at the Bradley Invitational at the Dragon's Dome in Pekin, Ill.
After senior Brittany Dehler and freshman Ashley Birdsong combined for a three-hit shutout in the Bradley's season opener, sophomore pitcher Rebecca Bishop extended the Braves streak of shutout innings to 13, tossing a three-hit shutout against Northern Illinois Saturday afternoon. Bishop struck out three and walked one in the win.
Fellow sophomore Jessie Musgrove provided all the offense Bishop would need in the bottom of the first when she belted a two-two run homer to left center to stake Bradley to an early 2-0 lead.
The Braves added another run in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Molly Bergeson walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bergeson moved to third on a deep fly ball hit by Joanna Pettit and scored on a throwing error on the play to give Bradley a 3-0 advantage.
Bradley delivered the knock out blow in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five times to finish off the 8-0 win. Freshman Jacqueline Vitale led off the inning with a double. Senior Bethany Till followed with a double of her own to score pinch runner Katy Dammer. Till scored on a single by Molly Bergeson, while Bergeson advanced to second on the throw home.
Christine Cooney reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners and Bergeson later scored a sacrifice fly by Joanna Pettit. The Braves scored their fourth run of the inning on a double steal and freshman Emily Bergeson capped off the game with a single to right center that scored pinch runner Anne Creighton with the fifth run of the frame.
The Braves (2-0 overall) pounded out eight hits and scored seven earned runs off Northern Illinois pitcher Taryn Hageman. The Huskies fell to 1-1 on the year with the loss, managing three singles off Bishop.
Bradley continues play a the Bradley Invitational Saturday afternoon against IUPUI.
