Box Score Peoria, Ill. ? Bradley senior right-hander Brandon Magee (Sheboygan, Wis./North) snapped Creighton's 15-game winning streak with his first career complete game shutout Friday afternoon at a cold and overcast O'Brien Field in downtown Peoria in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both clubs.
Magee pitched himself out of some delicate situations before he settled into his groove to pick up his third win on the season.
The best Bluejay threat came in the second inning, started with a Bradley fielding error, followed with botched base coverage on a Creighton sacrifice to put two runners on with no outs. The Jays would load the bases with a one-out single by Chad Ogden only to see Magee wiggle out of the jam by getting designated hitter Mark Wellwood to hit a tapper to the mound that forced Chris Gradoville at the plate and striking out Ryan Urzendowski looking to end the threat.
The only earned run of the game came courtesy of freshman shortstop Dan Brewer (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township). Brewer lead off the Bradley third with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a well-executed sacrifice by John Lequia (Racine, Wis./Washington Park). Coach Dewey Kalmer then called for the squeeze play and senior Jason Newburger (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) delivered the RBI bunt safely to the right side of the mound to score Brewer.
The one run is all Magee (3-1) would need.
The Bradley starter struck out nine, while walking just one and scattering eight Creighton hits over his nine innings of work. Magee's last two starts have yielded 23 strikeouts and just one earned run.
The Braves would tack on three more unearned runs after a two-out Creighton error in the seventh allowed a John Lequia two-run double and a Newberger RBI single iced the game for the Braves.
Adam Schaecher was the tough-luck loser for the Bluejays, tossing eight innings and allowing just one earned run and striking out five.
The win is the second straight for the Braves who even their overall mark at 8-8 and begin Valley play 1-0.
The second game of the Bradley-Creighton series gets underway Saturday at 1 p.m. at O'Brien field.
