PEORIA, Ill. --
Wisconsin-Milwaukee (26-20) dealt Bradley (22-24) a doubleheader sweep Wednesday evening at O'Brien Field, taking the first game 6-1, then spoiling
Dewey Kalmer's 1500th game as the Braves head coach by holding on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Bradley outhit the visitors in both games Wednesday, but the Panthers made better use of their scoring opportunities to run their winning streak to five games. In the opener, Wisconsin-Milwaukee got all of the offense it needed in the third inning by scoring three runs on four hits. Mike Goetz, who came into the doubleheader hitting .526 on the season, led off the third with a double and scored one out later on a Joe Nowicki single.
After Bradley starter Collin Brennan (5-2) hit Ross McCoy with a pitch, he advanced both runners with a wild pitch. Zak Rivera plated Nowicki with a single to right, while McCoy motored to third base. Catcher Jeremy Wilson followed with a bunt single to bring home the third run.
In the nightcap, Bradley scored twice in the sixth to pull within 3-2, but stranded runners at second and third. After giving both runs back in the top of the seventh to fall behind 5-2, the Braves again tried to rally in their last at-bat. Ryan Curry drew a one-out walk and Peter Malinowski, who homered in the sixth, was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with one out. Dan Brewer tried to tie the score with a drive to deep right center field, but the umpires ruled the ball hit off the top of the wall, and just under the yellow line, for an RBI double.
Colby Luttrell made it 5-4 with a sacrifice fly to score Malinowski, but Ryan Eigsti ended the game with a ground out.
The Braves will return to action by playing a split doubleheader Friday in Lawrence, Kan. Bradley will take on Northern Colorado at 2 p.m., followed by a 7 o'clock contest against host Kansas. Bradley will face Northern Colorado again Saturday at 1 p.m., before returning home to face Eastern Illinois Tuesday in the final home game of the season.
