Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan. ? For the second day in a row, one big inning doomed the Bradley Baseball team as the Braves (23-26) dropped an 11-5 decision to host Kansas (35-21) to complete its three-game participation in the Jayhawk Classic Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
After pulling into a 5-5 tie with a run in the top of the seventh, the Braves surrendered six runs in the bottom of the half, allowing the Jayhawks to pull away for a second straight day. Friday night, Kansas rode a 10-run fifth inning to a 15-3 victory versus the Braves.
In Saturday's game, Kansas roughed up Bradley starter Collin Walker (1-6), touching him for 10 runs, all earned, on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings. After giving up single runs in each of the first three innings, and two more runs in the fourth, Walker appeared to settle down and faced the minimum six hitters through the next two innings.
Trailing 5-4 going into the seventh, the Braves pulled even when first baseman Dan Brewer drove home pinch-runner Zach Norris from second base with a single to left. With runners at first and second and just one out, Bradley failed to capitalize on the chance for a big inning, however, when Colby Luttrell followed Brewer's base hit with an inning-ending double play.
Kansas did take advantage of its chance for a big inning in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with one out. Left fielder Allman cranked a grand slam home run to break the game open.
The Braves, who finished with a 1-2 record at the Jayhawk Classic, will return to O'Brien Field Tuesday for their 2006 home finale, a noon contest against Eastern Illinois. Bradley will conclude the regular season with a 3-game Missouri Valley Conference series Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Evansville. Heading into Saturday's conference action, Bradley's final position in the tightly-bunched Valley standings still could wind up anywhere from first to eighth.
