Box Score 2 PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior outfielder Justin Carr hit a walk-off double in the seventh inning of Wednesday's second game against Chicago State, capping Bradley's second straight last at-bat rally to complete a sweep against the Cougars (3-33) Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. The Braves (18-15) scored six in the sixth to win the first game 6-2, then scored two in the seventh for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
The first game began with some tense moments when Chicago State coach Vern Hasty was ejected between the first and second innings, following a confrontation with home plate umpire Mark Winters on his way to the third base coaching box. The argument delayed the game for nearly 10 minutes.
The incident appeared to charge up the Cougars, who took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Chicago State managed only four hits in the game against Bradley pitcher Tyler Thornton, but the Cougars got three of those hits in the fourth. A one-out single by Sean Murphy scored Thomas Creal with the game's first run and Preston Pires followed with a sacrifice fly.
Thornton, who recovered to retire 10 straight until Bryan Packard reached on an infield single with two outs in the seventh, improved to 4-0 on the season. The sophomore right-hander did not walk a hitter and struck out three.
With both games scheduled for just seven innings, Bradley put together a six-run outburst in the home half of the sixth. Ryan Eigsti drew a one-out walk against Chicago State starter Robert Vargas (0-8) to start the rally, and after a wild pitch, Carr drove home Bradley's first run with a double to right. Following a Mike McMillan fly out, Colby Luttrell drove Carr home with the tying run with a single to right. Luttrell then took two bases on a Vargas wild pitch and scored what proved to be the winning run on Jason Acevedo's single. Pat Ryerson, Dan Brewer, and Ryan Curry also added singles in the inning as the Braves got six of their nine hits for the game in the sixth.
Chicago State scored an unearned run in the third to take a 1-0 lead in the nightcap, but Bradley pulled even in the fourth when Adam Kimble delivered a two-out, RBI single. The Cougars threatened to split the doubleheader by scoring a go-ahead run in the seventh against relief pitcher Paul Rice (2-0), who is Bradley's regular third baseman. After inducing consecutive one-out walks from Rice, Chicago State loaded the bases with an Alex Hall single. Luke Grow then dropped down a squeeze bunt to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
Rice started the game-winning rally with a sharp single to left and Curry, who began the week eighth nationally with 0.53 doubles per game, drove him home with a double into the right centerfield gap. Reliever Mike Storrs took over for Chicago State starter Sean Murphy (0-5) and promptly walked Ryan Eigsti. Lefty Sean Freeman replaced Eigsti to face the left-handed hitting Carr, but the Bradley senior came through with a double into the right field corner to end the night's action.
Bradley will return to action Friday by opening a three-game weekend home stand against Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at O'Brien Field and Sunday's series finale is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
