PEORIA, Ill. -- When former Bradley All-Americans Gavin Glinton and Bryan Namoff met on the soccer pitch for the second time in a week Wednesday, they displayed their support for Danny Dahlquist, a member of the 2007 Bradley Soccer team who was killed in a house fire early Sunday morning. Prior to the SuperLiga tournament semifinal between D.C. United and the Los Angeles Galaxy Wednesday at the Home Depot Center, Glinton and Namoff posed for a photo displaying undershirts with messages of support for Dahlquist. (The Bradley SID office is working to obtain a copy of the photo, which was arranged to be taken by Glinton.)
Today's "Braves in the Pros" Update also includes reports on former Men's Basketball, Baseball and Softball players.
A veteran defender, Namoff played all 90 minutes for United, while Glinton came off the bench in the 76th minute. After D.C. United earned a 1-0 victory in a regular-season MLS matchup Aug. 9 at RFK Stadium, Los Angeles advanced to the SuperLiga final when David Beckham tallied a goal and an assist in his first career Galaxy start to spark the 2-0 victory.
Glinton's Galaxy will meet Mexican power CF Pachuca in the inaugural SuperLiga final Aug. 29. In the meantime, L.A.'s MLS games Saturday at New York (Fox Soccer Channel) and Thursday versus Chivas USA (ESPN2) will be televised nationally.
MARCUS POLLARD BLOGGING FOR SEAHAWKS
Former Bradley student-athletes are active throughout the professional sports world this summer, including college basketball player turned NFL tight end Marcus Pollard, who is writing a daily training camp blog for the Seattle Seahawks: http://www.seahawks.com/2007NWCNTrainingCampBlogs.aspx. In addition, several former Bradley Basketball players have signed professional contracts in Europe, while former Braves baseball and soccer players continue their seasons.
A power forward at Bradley from 1992 through 1994, Pollard now is preparing for his 13th NFL season and his first with Seattle following stops in Indianapolis (1995-2004) and Detroit (2005-06). He will begin the season having played in 177 career regular-season games, including 123 starts, with 321 receptions for 4,007 yards and 38 touchdowns.
Pollard made one reception for nine yards in Seattle's preseason opener, a 24-16 win Sunday at San Diego. The Seahawks will continue their four-game preseason schedule Saturday by visiting Green Bay. Pollard will return to the area during the 11th week of the NFL regular-season schedule when the Seahawks visit St. Louis Nov. 25.
FORMER BRADLEY BASKETBALL PLAYERS PREPARING FOR EUROPEAN SEASON
No fewer than five former Bradley Basketball players have signed contracts to play the 2007-08 season in Europe, including 2007 graduate Zach Andrews, who will begin his pro career with Costa Urbana Playas De Santa Pola in the Spanish LEB2 division.
During his two-year Bradley career, Andrews helped the Braves to back-to-back 22-win seasons, as well as Sweet 16 appearances in the 2006 NCAA Tournament and 2007 MasterCard NIT. The athletic, 6-foot-8 post player averaged 8.4 points and 6.0 rebounds as a Brave, while also setting the school career record for field goal percentage (.621).
At least two former Braves will be changing teams in Europe next season: a sixth-year European veteran Eddie Cage will join Andrews in Spain, while Marcellus Sommerville will start the 2007-08 campaign in the French Pro A division. Cage spent the last two seasons playing for Sheffield in the British Basketball League, but has signed with Basket Muro, joining Andrews in the Spanish LEB2 division. Sommerville began his pro career last year in Hungary, then moved to Angers BC in the French Pro B division during the winter break, before ultimately finishing his rookie season with Chalon in the French Pro A playoffs. Sommerville will play for Chalon's Pro A rival Le Havre in 2007-08.
Two more Braves appear to be staying put for the 2007-08 campaign. James Gillingham has re-upped with TBB Trier in the German Bundesliga, while Aba Koita will remain for Le Puy in the French Nationale 2 division as he prepares for his eighth pro campaign.
In addition to the five Braves playing in Europe, three more former Bradley stars will soon begin training camp in the United States. Patrick O'Bryant and Anthony Parker are preparing for the 2007-08 season with the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors, respectively, while Lawrence Wright has agreed to tour with the Harlem Globetrotters for a second straight year.
BASEBALL UPDATE
After two rough outings, former Bradley pitcher Brian Shouse returned to form by tossing an inning of scoreless relief Wednesday for Milwaukee, although his effort was not enough to prevent St. Louis from earning an 8-3 win at Miller Park. A left-handed situational reliever, Shouse has made 53 appearances for the NL Central leaders this season and he boasts a 2.52 earned run average with a 1-1 record and one save. He has allowed only 26 hits in 35.2 innings.
Among the highlights in the minor leagues, Joe Napoli was named the Hagestown Suns Player of the Month for July. Playing for the Single A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Washington Nationals, Napoli is now batting .267 for the season with 11 home runs and 44 runs batted in. He has six hits in the last two games, including a 4-for-5 effort with three doubles in Wednesday's 12-7 win at Kannapolis.
In other minor league updates, Michael Christl had his streak of five consecutive scoreless outings stopped Monday when he allowed two runs in one-third of an inning for the Cubs entry in the rookie Arizona Summer League. Christl is 1-1 with a 4.34 ERA in 11 relief appearances this year.
Brock Till's streak of consecutive scoreless outings for the Chattanooga Lookouts reached 10 games when he prevented the four batters he faced from scoring in Thursday's 5-2, 12-inning loss. Sandwiched around a brief stint with the Triple A Louisville Bats, Till is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his last 10 outings for the Lookouts, the Double A Southern League affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. For the season, Till boasts a 4-1 record with a 3.79 ERA.
Former Bradley ace Brandon Magee is scheduled to start tonight when the Dunedin Blue Jays host the Tampa Yankees in Florida State League action. Pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays Single A affiliate, Magee is 6-7 with a 4.20 ERA for the season. He had earned the victory in four consecutive outings until the streak was snapped his last time out Saturday at Jupiter.
Now batting .230 in 22 games this season, Ryan Eigsti has reached base safely in five consecutive games or the Idaho Chukars in the rookie Pioneer League. Eigsti was a 15th-round selection by the Kansas City Royals in June's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Bradley's other 2007 draft pick, infielder Ryan Curry, had one of Jamestown's three hits Thursday night in a 2-1 loss to Mahoning Valley in rookie New York-Penn League action. A 21st-round selection by the Florida Marlins, Curry now leads Jamestown with a .278 batting average and 25 runs batted in, while sharing the team lead with six home runs.
SOFTBALL UPDATE
Former Bradley Softball star Laura Harms is in her third season playing for the Chicago Bandits in National Pro Fastpitch. Harms is batting .227 and she ranks fourth on the team in at-bats (97) and runs scored (13).
