Box Score PEORIA, Ill. ? Head coach Paula Buscher and the Bradley women's basketball team looked to wrap up a three-game conference homestand with a win, but Missouri State used a 21-4 second-half run to break open a one-point ballgame and down the Braves 70-55 Saturday afternoon at Robertson Memorial Field House. The Braves led 32-30 at the break, but shot just 29.4 percent in the second half as the Lady Bears outscored BU 40-23 in the second half.
Bradley (7-9 overall, 1-4 MVC) held a two-point lead at halftime after shooting 48.3 percent in the first half and hung with Missouri State in the early moments of the second half. The Lady Bears held a 45-44 lead with 12:42 to play after a Devyn Flanagan (Riverton, Ill./Riverton) layup, but the Braves would go cold from the field hitting just one of its next 17 shots.
Michigan State transfer Maggie Dwyer ended a near two and a half minute scoring drought for both teams with a three-pointer from the wing with 10:17 remaining to push the Missouri State lead to 48-44. A defensive stop and breakaway layup by Roxie Stiles pushed the Bears lead to six points and a Dwyer layup with 7:48 to play capped a seven-point MSU spurt that extended the lead to 52-44.
Sophomore forward Jenny Van Kirk (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) ended a near six-minute scoring drought for the Braves with a three-pointer with 6:49 to cut the deficit to 52-47, but Bradley would miss its next seven shots, allowing Missouri State to go on a 14-1 run over the next five minutes. Quincy, Ill., native Tiff Terwelp had a layup to start things for the Bears and found Stiles open for a three-pointer on the next Missouri State possession.
Terwelp added another layup with 3:09 to play and converted a three-point play with 1:49 on the clock to cap the 21-4 run which put the game out of reach. In addition to scoring seven points during the spurt, Terwelp added nine of her game-high 14 rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot to highlight the near 11 minute span of time.
Van Kirk led the Braves with 13 points in 31 minutes of play, reaching double figures for the second consecutive game. The Braves shot just 29.4 percent in the second half and finished the afternoon with a 38.1 field goal percentage for the contest. Bradley made just 2-of-14 three-pointers, making a season-low 14.3 percent from beyond the arc. Junior Kelly Krumwiede (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds to help pace the Braves.
Flanagan added eight points, passing former teammate Amy Peters for 17th place on the Braves all-time scoring list and also added five rebounds and six assists. Sophomore guard Skye Johnson (Olympia Fields, Ill./Marian Catholic) chipped in with six points and tied a career-high with five assists and snagging a career-best five steals.
Missouri State (6-11 overall, 4-2 MVC) picked up its fourth consecutive win after a tough 2-11 start to the season and snapped the Braves three-game win streak in the all-time series. Dwyer led all players with 19 points to lead the Bears. Terwelp added a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds to go along with three assists and four steals, while Stiles and 2006-07 First-Team All-MVC selection Tahnee Balerio each added 12 points.
Bradley will be back in action Thursday when the Braves travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to face Drake in a 7:05 p.m. contest.
