Box Score BRADENTON, Fla. -- Bradley centerfielder Dan Brewer doubled and tripled in his four at-bats, but the rest of the Bradley offense managed only four more hits as the Braves (4-7) dropped their third straight game with a 12-2 decision against Maryland-Baltimore County (6-7) Sunday afternoon at the IMG Academy.
UMBC's first three hitters scored and the Retrievers never looked back. Leadoff hitter Wink Nolan was 4-for-4 with a double and a home run and was hit by two pitches in his six plate appearances. He scored three runs and drove in three to pace the UMBC attack.
After UMBC took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first off Bradley starter Tyler Thornton (0-1), the Braves did rally for two runs in the bottom of the first. Brewer led off the home half with his first triple of the season and scored on a Grant Escue ground out. After Nick Mitidiero also grounded out, right fielder Colby Luttrell singled and scored on Rob Elliott's two-out double. But Mike Brumleve could not keep the rally going and the Braves failed to generate much offense the rest of the game.
UMBC starter Ed Bach (1-1) picked up his first win of the season by limiting the Braves to just one more hit in his 7.0 innings of work, while Ryan Morse worked around a pair of hits in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Meanwhile, the Retrievers offense broke the game open with a 4-run second inning and pounded out 15 hits against three Bradley hurlers.
The Braves will return to action Monday by facing Central Connecticut State in a 2 p.m. (CST) game at IMG Academy. Junior right hander Collin Brennan is expected to make his first appearance of the season as Bradley's starter Monday.
