CARBONDALE, Ill. ?
Bradley sophomore Jacqueline Vitale (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons Townships H.S.) went 2-for-2 with two runs driven in, but Kansas used a five-run fifth inning to put away the Braves, 10-2 in five innings, at the second day of the Coach B Classic hosted by Southern Illinois in Carbondale.
Coming off one of the biggest wins in program history one night earlier, the Braves (5-3) jumped out of the gate for an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Janay Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) collected her third hit of the tournament on a one-out infield single and stole second base two batters later. Vitale followed with a single to drive home MItchell for the early lead.
The Jayhawks (14-5) promptly answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning off BU pitcher Amanda Clack (Hillsboro, Mo./Hillsboro H.S.). Amanda Jobe led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Kansas got a sacrifice fly from Liz Kocon for a 2-1 lead, followed by a two-run single from Stevie Crisosto to stretch the lead to 4-1.
After Kansas added another run in the second inning for a 5-1 advantage, the Braves bounced back in the third inning on an RBI double from Vitale that scored freshman Jess Boeger (St. Louis, Mo./Afton H.S.). The BU threat ended when pinch runner Katy Dammer (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East H.S.) was stranded at second base after a strikeout.
Kansas used a five-run outburst in the fifth inning to put the run rule into effect. The first four KU batters reached base in the inning, as the Jayhawks were aided by three Bradley errors during the frame. A two-out RBI single from Dougie McCaulley ended the game.
Bradley freshman pitcher Katie Dennis (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.) came on to pitch in the second inning for her first collegiate appearance. She allowed two earned runs over 3.2 innings and struck out five.
The Braves will finish tournament play later Sunday, playing tournament host Southern Illinois in a contest scheduled for 5 p.m. The Salukis have won ten in a row in the series with Bradley, including a 1-0 victory over the Braves in the second round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament last season.
