Despite scoring eight unanswered runs over the the final seven innings of Friday's game at Cincinnati to rally from a 10-2 deficit, the Bradley baseball team dropped an 11-10 decision to the Bearcats after a walk-off single from Cincinnati sophomore shortstop Chris Peters broke a 10-10 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Cincinnati started the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk and a single before a sacrifice bunt from T.J. Jones put runners at second and third with just one out. Following an intentional walk from Bradley senior pitcher Tyler Thornton (Minier, Ill./Olympia H.S.) to load the bases, Peters singled through the left side to score pinch runner Zach Collaros and give the Bearcats the 11-10 win.
The Bearcats jumped on the Braves early, scoring five runs in each of the first two innings to jump to a 10-2 lead. In the bottom of the first inning, Cincinnati plated a pair of runs on back-to-back run-scoring singles, then caught a break with the bases loaded when a BU fielding error cleared the bases on Justin Riddell's single for a 5-0 lead.
Facing the 10-2 deficit in the top of the third inning, the Braves started chipping away when sophomore catcher Brett Hendricks (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette Senior H.S.) drilled a two-run double down the left field line to bring the Braves to within six at 10-4. Junior Andrew Eggers (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) drove home two more Bradley runs with a two-run single in the top of the fifth to make the score 10-6.
After plating single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, the Braves completed the comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Following a one-out walk to junior Jordan Colvin (O'Fallon, Ill./Southwestern Illinois College/O'Fallon H.S.), senior shortstop Tommy Fitzgerald connected on his second home run of the season to tie the game at 10-10.
The Braves collected 13 hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-6 effort from senior first baseman Grant Escue (Washington, Ill./Stanford/Washington H.S.). Starting pitcher Rob Scahill (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook H.S.) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing six runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Thornton took the loss.
The two squads will resume its four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at noon in Cincinnati.
