MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The Braves rallied from a two-run deficit to tie the score in the top of the ninth, but Memphis dashed Bradley's bid for a comeback win with a run in the bottom of the tenth for a 3-2 victory at the Service Academy Spring Classic Sunday.
The Tigers struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the first and took a 2-0 lead after an RBI double by Adam McClain in the fifth. In the eighth, freshman outfielder Mike Tauchman (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd H.S.) ripped a one-out double to right-center field and scored on a throwing error by Memphis' pitcher to make it a 2-1 game.
Senior right-hander Kori Jensen (Wichita, Kan./Hutchinson County C.C./Goddard H.S.) held the Tigers in the bottom half of the eighth, while senior first baseman Mike McMillan (Bloomington, Ill./Normal University H.S.) led off the ninth with his third single of the game, advancing to second on an error by the Tigers' third baseman.
Freshman Jason Leblebijian (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.) entered the game to pinch run for McMillan and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. With one out and runners at first and third, senior infielder Matt Fritz (Northbrook, Ill./DePauw University/Glenbrook North H.S.) delivered a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Leblebijian and tied the game at 2-2.
After a lead-off double by Tauchman, the Braves tried to manufacture the go-ahead run in the tenth. Freshman catcher Josh Camalick (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central H.S.) sacrificed Tauchman to third, but Bradley's next two hitters came up empty. Memphis added a run in the bottom of the tenth for the walk-off victory, 3-2.
McMillan went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Tauchman and sophomore infielder Rob Elliott (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) each had two hits. Sophomore right-hander Jacob Booden (Vernon Hills, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) pitched well in his first start of the season, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out six in 4.1 innings.
The Braves (0-3) will return to action Saturday, March 6 with a double-header at Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m.
