PEORIA, Ill. - The Bradley baseball team took a break from its regular-season schedule to take on the Peoria Chiefs in a seven-inning exhibition game Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. In a game where both teams used wooden bats, it was the Chiefs who generated most of the offense, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits for a 10-1 victory.
Peoria left fielder Richard Jones displayed his power in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo blast to right-center field to give the Chiefs a 2-0 edge. The home team added three more runs on two hits in the second, including a two-run double by shortstop Hak-Ju Lee, to take a 5-0 lead.
The Braves got on the board in the top of the third when freshman outfielder Mike Tauchman (Palatine, Ill./William Fremd H.S.) ripped a one-out triple to right-center field and scored on a groundout by junior outfielder Brian Martin (Glen Ellyn, Ill./College of DuPage/Lombard Montini Catholic H.S.) to make the score 5-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, a two-run single by first baseman Justin Bour highlighted a three-run inning for the Chiefs and made the score 8-1. Peoria added two more runs on three hits in the fifth and held the Braves hitless in the final two innings for the 10-1 win.
Tauchman had two of Bradley's four hits and scored the Braves' lone run, while Bour paced the Peoria offense with two hits and two RBI's. Freshman right-hander Rob Kennedy (Chicago, Ill./Northside Prep) took the loss on the mound for Bradley, allowing five runs (four earned runs) on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. Peoria right-hander Su-Min Jung earned the win, scattering four hits and one run over 3.0 innings while striking out three.
Bradley will return to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at home against Missouri State. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, April 9 at 6 p.m.
