Box Score 2 PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Kate Singler (Witt, Ill./Nokomis/Heartland) homered in both games and Bradley roughed up Indiana State pitchers for a combined 15 runs and 19 hits as the Braves won 5-2 and 10-3 to sweep a doubleheader from the Sycamores Saturday afternoon at Laura Bradley Park.
Bradley pounded out five extra-base hits, including three homers, and received solid pitching performances from freshman Madeline Lynch-Crumrine (Sedro-Woolley, Wash./Sedro-Woolley) and sophomore Mackenzie Camp (Mapleton, Ill./Limestone) to take back games of the rain-shortened series. The Braves (10-35 overall, 3-14 MVC) moved ahead of the Sycamores (14-27 overall, 3-15 MVC) into ninth in the Valley standings with the victories.
Lynch-Crumrine struck out a season-high six batters and gave up just three hits in a complete game win in the opener to improve to 2-6 on the year.
Singler, who has homered in each of the last three games, gave Bradley a 1-0 lead with a one-out homer in the bottom of the third of the first game, but Indiana State answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. Lynch-Crumrine retired the Sycamores in order in each of the first three innings, before Stephanie Robinson led off the fourth with a single and Kim Pierce delivered the big hit in the game for Indiana State with a two-out, two-run double to right center to put the Sycamores in front 2-1.
Bradley tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Lynch-Crumrine scored on a suicide squeeze and junior Jackie Roth (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) ripped a two-run homer later in the inning to put BU back in front 4-2. Singler followed with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch as the Braves took a 5-2 advantage into the late innings.
Pierce was the last Indiana State player to reach with her two-run double in the fourth, as Lynch-Crumrine recorded 10 consecutive outs to close out the victory.
The Braves matched a season-high with 10 runs in the nightcap and Camp scattered eight hits in the win as she earned her team-leading fourth victory of the year (4-12).
Junior Brittany Fairbairn (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East/Kankakee C.C.), who hit cleanup in both contests, went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI to help highlight the day's second game, while Singler was 1-for-2 with two runs and a three-run homer.
Fairbairn staked Camp to an early lead with a run-scoring infield single in the first and Singler belted her team-best seventh home run of the year, hitting a three-run blast in the second to give Bradley an early 4-0 lead. Singler's seven home runs are tied for the fifth-best season total in school history and pushed her career home run total to 11.
Indiana State pulled within a run at 4-3 with a three-run third inning. Pierce led off the frame with a solo homer and Bailey Wittenauer drove in another run with a double to right center. Wittenauer came around to score on a single off the bat of Stephanie Jonson.
The Sycamores left two runners in scoring position in the fourth and one in both the fifth and sixth innings. An Indiana State error in the third inning led to an unearned BU run and Bradley broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. Senior Katelyn Kegley (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) opened the inning with her fourth hit of the day to cap a 4-for-6 day at the plate and Roth drove in a run with a single to left.
A wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed senior Denise Jilka (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) to come home and junior Julie Sherman (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) knocked in a run with a groundout to the right side of the infield. Fairbairn capped the scoring with a two-run triple to right center as the Braves completed the series sweep with a 10-3 victory.
Bradley opens the final road swing of the regular season Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Northern Iowa.
