Box Score
OMAHA, Neb. - Southern Illinois pitcher Cameron Maldonado (5-7) threw his first complete game of the season and the Salukis (23-33) ended Bradley's season with a 5-1 win versus the Braves (22-32) in Game 6 at the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship Wednesday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.
Bradley starting pitcher John Nasshan (3-8) allowed only four hits on 8.0 innings of shutout ball in his May 8 start versus Southern Illinois, but the Salukis used back-to-back, 1-out doubles in the top of the first inning to take a quick 1-0 lead. Austin Montgomery followed Wes Neece's double with a two-bagger of his own to open the scoring.
The Salukis tacked on four unearned runs in the third inning after the Braves committed a pair of infield errors. Third baseman Rob Elliott twice appeared to start inning-ending double plays, but the Braves came away from the two plays with only one out. After second baseman David Compitello dropped Elliott's throw on a Montgomery ground ball, Elliott fielded a Brock Harding grounder and stepped on third base for the inning's second out, but threw wildly to first, allowing SIU's second run to score. After Jordan Sivertsen drew a 2-out walk to load the bases, Nick Johnson hit a 3-run double off the glove of diving leftfielder Mike Tauchman for a 5-0 lead.
The Braves got on the board in the eighth inning when Elliott doubled, took third on an Andres Rodriguez single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brad Kimball, but the was all the scoring Bradley could muster against Maldonado. The Saluki pitcher gave up eight hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out five.
Nasshan suffered the loss for the Braves by allowing five runs, but only one earned, on seven hits in his 6.0 innings. The trio of Tory Doerr (2.0 innings), Nick Gross (0.2 innings) and Justin Ziegler (0.1) kept the Salukis off the board the rest of the way.
