LAS VEGAS - Cold-shooting again doomed Bradley as the Braves (5-7) shot just 31.4 percent from the field and made only three baskets in a span of 21-minutes, 57-seconds en route to a 71-55 loss to Pacific (9-2) in the final round of the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic Saturday at South Point Arena and Equestrian Center.
Omari Grier scored a game-high 15 points, while freshman swing man Jordan Swopshire drained four second-half 3-pointers to score a career-best 12 points and Auston Barnes chipped in with 10 for the Braves. T.J. Wallace led the Tigers with 14 points, Tony Gill scored 11 and Aaron Short added 10 for Pacific.
Though Bradley made just 6-of-22 (.273) field goal attempts in the first half, the Braves converted 13-of-17 (.765) free throw attempts in the opening frame to remain close. But as the cold shooting continued into the second half, Pacific steadily pulled away and stretched its lead to as many as 22 points.
Bradley's Walt Lemon, Jr. entered the game as Bradley's leading scorer at 16.1 ppg and as the active scoring leader in the Missouri Valley Conference, but he scored his only bucket on a runout basket with 11:12 left in the first half to pull Bradley within 14-12.
The Braves managed only two more field goals in the first half and just one to start the second half until Grier lifted the lid with 11:55 left. By that time, the Tigers held a double-digit lead that they would not relinquish.
Bradley will try to snap its season-long, five-game losing streak Dec. 28 when the Braves host South Florida in a 7 p.m. game at Carver Arena. The game against the Bulls will be the final non-conference tuneup before the Braves open Valley play Jan. 1 at Northern Iowa.
