Box Score PEORIA, Ill. - Junior point guard Tramique Sutherland turned in an impressive debut after missing the first nine games of the season due to injury, checking in with 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and no turnovers in 30 minutes while leading Bradley (4-6) to an 80-38 win against Eureka (2-4) Thursday night at Carver Arena.
Bradley, which had not played in eight days while focusing on final exams, welcomed Sutherland into the lineup while facing an old local rival. Eureka is a NCAA Division III school located just 22 miles from Peoria of US Highway 24. Thursday's game was the 60th meeting in the all-time series, primarily as Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals from 1910-37, and Bradley now owns a 40-20 series advantage by rolling to the 42-point margin of victory in the first meeting against the Red Devils since 1937.
Aided by Sutherland's steady first half - 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in 17 minutes - Bradley made 17-of-24 (.708) first half field goal attempts en route to a 43-26 lead at the break. The Braves turned to their stifling defense in the second half, limiting Eureka to just 5 points through the first 12:07 of the second period on the way to a 5-for-28 (.179) shooting effort for the half.
Sutherland was one of four Braves to finish in double figures. Senior forward Auston Barnes made all six of his field goal attempts in a 14-point effort and freshman forward Josh Cunningham collected Bradley's first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Ka'Darryl Bell, who started the first nine games at point guard, slid into the shooting guard role Thursday and finished with 12 points and four steals in 22 minutes.
Ian Saathoff led Eureka with 13 points, while Parker Gibson added 10 points and a team-best six rebounds.
Bradley, which has won four straight at home, will return to action Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CDT by facing defending Big West Conference champion UC Irvine in Las Vegas in the first-round game of the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic. Monday's second round game will feature either defending Horizon League champion Green Bay or Arkansas-Little Rock with the losers to meet in the consolation game at 1 p.m. CDT, followed by the championship game at 3:30.
