Box Score PEORIA, Ill. - Bradley guard Warren Jones became the first men's player in Renaissance Coliseum history to crack 30 points, pumping in a career-best 33 points to lead the Braves (3-4) to an 84-73 win against Central Michigan (5-1) Tuesday night.
Bradley improved to 6-1 all-time at Renaissance Coliseum since starting to play occassional games back on campus in 2011. Among the building's men's college basketball records set Tuesday night: Bradley enjoyed a +21 rebound margin (41-20), the Braves made 28-of-38 free throw attempts (building highs for both makes and attempts) and Central Michigan guard Chris Fowler made 16-of-20 free throw attempts (also both building highs for individual makes and attempts).
The game's first nine minutes saw some back-and-forth play and saw Central Michigan hold a 14-12 lead following an Austin Keel hoop with 11:15 remaining. Bradley guard Omari Grier answered with a mid-range jumper to launch a 14-0 run that put the Braves in control. Jones hit three 3-pointers during the run and finished the half with 20 points.
Central Michigan pulled to within two twice in the second half, 41-39 and 43-41, but the Braves never surrendered the lead. After Braylon Rayson hit a tough jumper over Bradley forward Auston Barnes to get the Chippewas withing 56-52 with 8:46 remaining, the Braves went inside for baskets from Xzavier Taylor and Josh Cunningham, then capped a 7-0 run with a Grier 3-pointer for a 63-52 lead with 6:40 remaining. Central Michigan could not get within eight points the rest of the way.
Grier complimented Jones' effort with 13 points off the bench, wihle freshman forward Donte Thomas led Bradley's rebounding effort with a career-best eight boards.
Fowler led four Central Michigan players in double-figures with 24 points. Rayson added 17, John Simons 12 and Josh Kozinski chipped in with 11.
Central Michigan entered the game averaging 40.0 rebounds per game and boasting a +10.2 rebound margin per game on the season, but no Chippewas player finished with more than three rebounds Tuesday as Bradley dominated the glass to the tune of a 41-20 rebound margin.
Bradley will hit the road for four of its next five games, beginning with a Saturday night visit to Memphis. The teams were Missouri Valley Conference rivals from 1967-73 and last met during the third round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament in Oakland, Calif., where the Tigers earned an 80-64 win. Saturday's 8:30 p.m. game at the FedEx Forum will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
