PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore pitcher Elliot Ashbeck (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) has been named the Bradley Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced Wednesday after picking up the victory in Sunday's 5-0 win at Dayton.
Ashbeck took the rubber to start Sunday's game against Dayton having never thrown more than 3.2 innings or striking out more than three in 20 previous career appearances, but allowed only two singles and a walk, while striking out nine in a career-best 7.2 scoreless innings to help lead Bradley to a 5-0 win against the Flyers. He struck out at least one Dayton hitter in each of his first seven innings. A business major, Ashbeck owns a 3.27 cumulative grade point average.
Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the Country Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.
Ashbeck and the Bradley baseball team return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. against Northern Illinois at the Corn Crib in Normal, Ill.
