Box Score PEORIA, Ill. - Steve Adkins allowed only five hits and struck out seven in his first career shutout and Evan Gruener was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI's, leading Bradley (19-5, 2-0 MVC) to a 10-0 win against Southern Illinois (4-21, 0-5 MVC) Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park.
On the heels of Elliot Ashbeck's shutout performance in Friday's 1-0, series-opening win, Adkins (3-1) followed up with Bradley's seventh shutout of the season, the best season total for the Braves since the staff blanked eight opponents in 2006. The junior right-hander surrendered four singles and a double and stranded eight Saluki base runners in the run-shortened, 7-inning contest.
Bradley got all the offense it needed in the fourth inning when Ashbeck drew a leadoff walk against Salukis starter Bryce Sablotny (0-1) and scored on Gruener's 2-out double. Sablotny allowed three hits in his 6.0 innings of work before giving way to the SIU bullpen to start the seventh.
Gruener immediately greeted Anthony Shimkus with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh, his team-leading fourth long ball of the season. The sophomore left fielder added a 2-run single later in the inning, then scored on a Chris Godinez 2-run single that ended the game due to the Missouri Valley Conference run-rule (10-run advantage after seven innings).
Bradley scored nine runs in the seventh inning on five hits, two Saluki errors, four walks and a hit by pitch.
The Braves will shoot for the series sweep Sunday when the teams wrap the 3-game set with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Dozer Park.
