Box Score at Iowa 7, Bradley 6
IOWA CITY, IA - Bradley banged out 13 hits, but could not ride the momentum of a quick start to the finish as Iowa (7-11) scored two runs in the seventh and two in the ninth to rally for a 7-6 victory Tuesday evening at Duane Banks Field.
The Braves (9-7) saw their 5-game winning streak come to an end, despite building a 5-1 lead through the first three innings. Six straight Braves reached base safely with one out in the third, leading to the three runs. After Paul Solka started the outburst with a double, Ian Kristan and Evan Gruener both singled, Allan Beer walked and Luke Mangieri reached on an error. Andy Shadid, who extended his hitting streak to a team-best 10 games with a RBI double in the second inning, completed the third inning scoring with a run-scoring ground out.
Iowa shortstop Nick Roscetti keyed the comeback for the Hawkeyes, finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI's, including a walk-off single in the ninth. Roscetti's sacrifice fly in the fifth pulled Iowa to within 5-2 and he added a 2-run double in the seventh to get the Hawkeyes within 6-5. Facing Bradley closer Eric Scheuermann (L, 1-1) in the ninth with a runner at second, one out and the game tied, Roscetti delivered a single to center field.
Brady Wilkin (2-6), Spencer Gaa (2-4), Solka (2-4), Gruener (2-5) and Mangieri (2-5) all collected two hits for the Braves Tuesday.
The teams combined to use 14 pitchers. Iowa's eighth pitcher, Zach Daniels (W, 1-1) earned the win for the Hawkeyes by pitching out of a ninth-inning jam. Mangieri led off the top of the ninth with a single, but after Shadid moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Wilkin lined into a double play to end the threat. The Braves also came up empty in the eighth inning after Tyler Leffler and Solka opened the frame with leadoff walks. After their early outburst, the Braves stranded runners in scoring position in six consecutive innings before the ninth-inning double play wiped out their final scoring chance.
Bradley will return to action by playing four games in Indianapolis this weekend, beginning with a Friday night game against Western Michigan. The Braves will face Butler and Western Michigan in a split doubleheader Saturday, then will close out the weekend series with a Sunday game at Butler.
