CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Sophomore RF Jean-Francois Garon hooked a go-ahead home run around the right field fair pole in the top of the ninth and sophomore LHP Cole Cook retired all five batters he faced to earn the win in his Bradley debut, leading the Braves (2-1) to a 7-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-2) and a season-opening series win against the host Islanders at Chapman Field.

In a back-and-forth tussle, Bradley overcame an early, 2-0 deficit with single runs in the second and third innings, two in the fourth on Derek Bangert's first career home run and one in the fifth for a 5-2 lead.  The Islanders battled back with one in the home half of the fifth and two more in the sixth against Bradley starting RHP Eric Scheuermann.

The score remained knotted at 5-5 until the eighth, when pinch-hitter Carson Weber came through with 2-out, RBI single for a 6-5 lead.  The Islanders got the run back in the home half of the eighth to finally end Scheuermann's day.  A transfer from Illinois Central College, Cook relieved with one out and a runner at third base in the eighth.  Although he surrendered a sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced, Cook (W, 1-0) got a strikeout to end the eighth, then set the Islanders down in order in the ninth after Garon's go-ahead blast.

Bradley banged out three home runs Sunday.  In addition to Bangert and Garon, catcher Ian Kristan led off the second inning with his first homer of the year to get Bradley's scoring started.  Garon (2-4), Kristan (2-5) and freshman 3B Brendan Dougherty (2-3) combined for six of Bradley's 10 hits.

Among Bradley's all-time leaders in career ERA entering the game, Scheuermann surrendered five earned runs in his 7.1 innings Sunday.  He scattered 10 hits, but did not walk a batter, while striking out five.

The Braves will return to action with another 3-game road series next weekend at Tennessee Tech (4-0), which opened the season with a 4-game sweep of Toledo in Cookville.
