EDWARDSVILLE, IL - Senior outfielder Evan Gruener returned to the starting lineup with a bang and Matthew Richey pitched 4.2 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief as the duo led Bradley (13-16) to a 10-7 win against SIU Edwardsville (17-15) Tuesday night at Simmons Complex.

Tuesday's game was Bradley's first matchup against former associate head coach Sean Lyons, who is in his first year as head coach at SIUE.  Two of Bradley's offensive stars under Lyons delivered some big blows against their former hitting instructor Tuesday night.

Gruener, who missed most of the first half of the season due to injury, responded to his first career start in right field by going 2-for-3 with a second-inning grand slam and a fourth-inning single.  Senior left fielder Spencer Gaa was 2-for-5 and drove home Gruener with a 2-out single in the fourth to put the Braves ahead for good, 7-6.

After Bradley starter Ryan Hodgett was touched for six runs on five walks and four hits in his 2.1 innings, Richey (W, 1-0) got the game back under control for the Braves.  SIUE had taken a 6-5 lead on two walks and two home runs in the third, before Richey entered with a runner at first and one out.  The sophomore righty got a strikeout and ground out to end the third.  After surrendering a leadoff walk in the fourth, he retired 11 in a row until giving up a 2-out single in the seventh.

Allan Beer pitched a perfect eighth inning and Eric Scheuermann closed out the win, despite allowing a run on two hits in the ninth.

In a peculiar stat, Bradley's order was retired in order in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings, before breaking the odd-numbered-innings lack of base runners on Brendan Dougherty's 2-out single in the ninth.  In the four even-numbered innings, however, the Braves erupted for all 10 runs on 12 hits.

Bradley continues a busy week Wednesday when the Braves return home to host Northwestern in a 7 p.m. start at Dozer Park.  The game against the Wildcats will be the first of three home games versus Big 10 Conference members in the next two weeks and admission will be free for the midweek game at Dozer Park.
