Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – The Bradley baseball team opened its three-game series with Wichita State at Dozer Park with a 6-5 victory on Friday night. The Braves improve to 14-17 on the season, while earning their first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season to move to 1-3 versus league foes. The Shockers, meanwhile, dropped to 16-17 overall with an even 2-2 mark in MVC play.

Three Braves recorded multi-hit games in the winning effort with Brendan Dougherty leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance and driving in three runs. Andrew Ivelia was also 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Derek Bangert went 2-for-4.

After the Shockers grabbed the lead with a one-run first inning, the Braves plated a pair in both the second and third to grab a 4-1 advantage – a lead the team would not relinquish. Dougherty doubled in two runs in the second with a two-baser down the right field line. In the third inning, Luke Mangieri doubled to right before Bangert drove him in with a single. The Braves then loaded the bases and Bangert scored via a Dougherty single – his third RBI of the night.

Wichita State scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth but Bradley reclaimed its two-run lead in the fifth with an unearned run of its own. The Shockers then pulled within one again, 5-4, in the sixth inning with a two-out double.

The Braves added an insurance run in the seventh when an apparent Ivelia two-run homer turned into a single and just one run scored when Ivelia passed Ian Kristan on the base paths and was called out.

The missed run did not cost the Braves, however, as Eric Scheuermann limited the damage in the final two innings. The senior allowed a single in the eighth but erased that with a double play and then after allowing a pair of two-out doubles in the ninth, Scheuermann got the final out with a first-pitch fly out.

Nathan Stong earned the win for the Braves on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs on the night before Scheuermann pitched the final three innings and yielding just the one run.

Game two of the three-game series is set for tomorrow afternoon at Dozer Park with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
