Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – Junior Derek Bangert hit two home runs, including a go-ahead shot in the eighth inning, as Bradley won a back-and-forth affair with Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park, 11-10. The Braves improve to 15-17 on the season and 2-3 against Missouri Valley Conference foes, while the Shockers drop to 16-18 and 2-3 in conference action.

Bangert finished the game 2-for-4 on the afternoon, which also included a grand slam in the third inning. The junior drove in six runs in the winning effort, tied for the fourth most in program history.

Overall, four additional hitters had multiple hits for the Braves on the day, including each of the team's first four in the batting order. Sophomore Luke Mangieri and senior Evan Gruener led the Braves with three hits with Mangieri driving in three, while freshman Luke Shadid and junior Andrew Ivelia both recorded two hits.

The victory did not come easy for the Braves as the team faced an early 6-0 hole heading into bottom of the third after the Shockers plated three in both the second and third innings. It didn't take Bradley long to erase that deficit, however. The first three Braves reached base safely in the third before a line-drive single by Mangieri brought home the team's first run. With one pitch, Bangert then quickly pulled the team within one with a grand-slam shot over the left field fence. Junior Ian Kristan then squared the contest as the Braves hit back-to-back home runs for a 6-6 game through three innings.

Wichita State reclaimed its lead in the top half of the fourth with a solo shot but the Braves scored three in their half of the inning for their first advantage of the contest. Mangieri doubled in a run to tie the game before a passed ball scored Ivelia. Bangert then hit a sacrifice fly that plated Mangieri and gave Bradley a 9-7 lead.

The Braves added a run in the sixth when Mangieri followed a Shadid triple with a single but the Shockers pulled even in the seventh inning with a two-out three-run homer for a 10-10 contest. Bangert then secured the series win for the Braves with a solo shot in the eighth for the 11-10 lead – the second multi-home run game of his career (also hit two against Tennessee Tech on Feb. 25).

From there, junior Allan Beer finished off the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to improve to 2-2 on the season. Beer pitched 2.1 innings of relief and allowed only one hit and one run for the win on the mound.

Reagan Biechler took the loss for the Shockers in his first decision of the season. Wichita State did tie a Dozer Park record with four home runs in the defeat – tying a mark set by the Shockers in 2011 and matched by the Braves earlier this year against Milwaukee.

The Braves look for the three-game sweep at Dozer Park tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
