Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – Wichita State avoided a sweep to the Bradley baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park, earning an 8-5 victory over the Braves. BU is now 15-18 on the year and 2-4 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Shockers improve to 17-18 and 3-3 in league play.

For the second-straight contest, the Shockers raced to an early 6-0 lead. Wichita State put together a four-run third inning thanks to four singles with a home run in the middle before a two-run fourth inning behind two doubles and one Bradley error.

Bradley, however, would attempt to rally from six runs down for the second-straight game. The Braves hit home runs in back-to-back innings with sophomore Andy Shadid striking in the fifth and junior Derek Bangert going yard in the sixth.

The Shockers added another run in the top half of the seventh for a 7-2 advantage but Bradley quickly pulled back within two thanks to a three-run output in its half of the frame. After the first two Braves reached base, freshman Luke Shadid brought them home with a two-out triple. The rookie then scored after junior Andrew Ivelia singled him home for the 7-5 contest.

The Braves, however, weren't able to complete their rally for a second-straight day. The Shockers added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out single and any hopes for a comeback were dashed in the ninth with a double play.

Both Jean-Francois Garon and Andy Shadid led the Braves with two hits in the contest. Cole Cook took the loss on the mound after pitching seven innings and allowing seven runs (six earned).

Cody Tyler earned the win for the Shockers with seven innings of work and five runs allowed.

The Braves take a break from MVC play for a home midweek matchup against Iowa on Wednesday. First pitch at Dozer Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
