Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – The Bradley baseball team claimed the rubber game of the I-74 Rivalry on Sunday afternoon after freshman Luke Shadid hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning for an 8-6 Braves victory against Illinois State. BU improves to 18-19 on the year and 4-5 against Missouri Valley Conference foes, while the Redbirds drop to 11-27 and 1-8 in MVC play.

The Braves trailed, 6-3, after ISU plated four in the top half of the sixth but quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning before Shadid's winner in the eighth. A walk by Ian Kristan and a pair of singles by Spencer Gaa and Brendan Dougherty started the rally in the sixth and loaded the bases. A single by Andy Shadid then scored two before a double by Andrew Ivelia added one more run to square the contest at six.

The score remained tied until Luke Shadid's heroics in the eighth. Jean-Francois Garon started the inning with a bunt single to third before the rookie responded with a shot over the left-field fence on the second pitch of the at-bat. Eric Scheuermann then pitched a perfect ninth to secure the Bradley victory, finishing the game with a strike out and posting his sixth save of the season.

It didn't look as if the Braves would need a rally as BU grabbed the early lead in the contest. A sacrifice fly by Derek Bangert scored Luke Shadid for the game's first run before a single by Kristan brought Luke Mangieri home for a 2-0 lead after three. The Braves then added a third run in the fourth when Dougherty singled to start the inning and eventually scored on an ISU fielding error.

The Redbirds, however, scored the next six runs to claim a 6-3 lead. Illinois State plated two unearned runs in the top of the fifth to pull within one, 3-2. In the top half of the sixth, the Braves defense committed two more errors and helped ISU add four more runs for the three-run advantage.

The Braves settled down after that with its three-run sixth before Luke Shadid's fourth home run of his rookie season. Allan Beer earned the victory on the mound to improve to 3-2 on the season after allowing zero runs in 2.2 innings of work.

Dougherty recorded his second-straight three-hit game and was 3-for-4 to lead the BU offense. Overall, nine Braves registered a hit on the afternoon with the Shadid brothers both knocking in a game-high two runs.

Bradley is back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday with a pair of home non-conference games. The Braves open the midweek contests with Illinois on Tuesday with first pitch at Dozer Park scheduled for 6 p.m.
