Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – Sophomore Cole Cook pitched seven scoreless innings to start the game and the Braves used a five-run sixth to pull away for a 7-2 victory against Southern Illinois at Dozer Park on Friday. The Braves improve to 20-29 with the win and 6-14 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Salukis drop to 27-28 and 10-10 in league play.

The Braves took the lead in the first inning and never looked back. Sophomore Luke Mangieri hit a two-out double that scored two and gave BU the early advantage.

The two-run lead held until the sixth inning behind the strength of the left arm of Cook before the Braves gave the sophomore a cushion with a five-run frame. Junior Derek Bangert opened the sixth with a solo home run – his 14th long ball of the season. Bradley then loaded the bases with one out before sophomore Andy Shadid knocked two more runs in with a double, extending the BU advantage to 5-0. A fielder's choice and a SIU error plated two more as Bradley finished the inning with a 7-0 lead.

Southern Illinois got two runs back in the top of the eighth, drawing four walks around a single for the 7-2 score. However, sophomore Matthew Richey entered the game with the bases loaded and got the next two batters out without giving up a run. He then pitched around a two-out double in the ninth to secure the BU victory and earn the first save of his career.

Cook pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and six hits to improve to 8-5 on the mound. Mangieri was 2-for-5 at the plate to lead the BU offense, while seven of the nine Braves recorded a hit on the day.

The Braves evened the series with the victory and the rubber game is set for tomorrow. The regular-season finale and BU Senior Day is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Dozer Park.
