Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – A five-run sixth inning and a complete-game shutout by sophomore Cole Cook led the Bradley baseball team to a 6-0 victory over visiting Evansville on Saturday afternoon. The Braves improve to 19-24 on the year and 5-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Purple Aces drop to 14-31 and 5-8 against league foes.

Cook and Evansville pitcher Connor Strain traded scoreless frames early before the Bradley offense plated six runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Braves first got on the scoreboard in the fifth after senior Evan Gruener doubled to start the frame and was then brought home after a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.

The one run was all the offense that BU needed with Cook pitching but the Braves added five more runs in the sixth to stretch their advantage. After the first three Braves reached base to start the inning, senior Spencer Gaa brought two home with a double before sophomore Jean-Francois Garon hit a three-run homer – his 10th of the season – for the 6-0 lead.

Cook took it from there and pitched three more scoreless innings – with only one player reaching base via error – for his first career shutout. Overall, the sophomore struck out four and allowed just five hits and one walk to keep the Aces off the scoreboard and earn his seventh win of the season.

Garon led the BU offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate, hitting a single and double in addition to his home run.

The rubber game of the series is set for tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at Dozer Park scheduled for 1 p.m.
