Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – The Bradley baseball team held Western Illinois to just three hits and kept the Leathernecks off the scoreboard for the final eight frames, while eight different Braves recorded a hit in a 9-2 non-conference win on Wednesday night. BU improves to 21-9 with its fourth-straight victory, while Western Illinois drops to 7-21.

Junior Luke Mangieri powered the Braves to the victory with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, three RBI and two runs scored, including his second home run of the season. Sophomores Luke Shadid and Brendan Dougherty also had multi-hit days as the Braves earned the midweek victory.

The Leathernecks struck first in the contest with two runs (one earned) in the opening inning but Mitch Janssen limited the damage by drawing a double play with the bases loaded. The Braves quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning as the first five BU hitters reached base safely. Derek Bangert drew a bases loaded walk for the first BU run before Dougherty added a single and Andy Shadid a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 Bradley advantage.

Mangieri then extended the Braves lead by knocking in the next three Bradley runs. In the bottom of the second, the junior scored Kyle Antos with a groundout to second before drilling his second homer of the season in the bottom of the fifth to plate two more for a 6-2 Bradley lead. BU would add one more in the sixth and two in the eighth for the final 9-2 score.

After escaping damage in the first inning, Janssen would allow only two more hits to earn the victory on the mound. The junior pitched 5.2 innings to improve to 3-0 in 2018, with Boby Johnson and Brooks Gosswein combining to retire the final 10 batters of the game in relief.

Bradley continues non-conference play at Dozer Park against Robert Morris-Springfield on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
