PEORIA, IL – Maybe rest is overrated.  Working on just three days rest since his start in Tuesday's win at Illinois, Bradley junior right-hander Mitch Janssen turned in a career-best performance in an emergency start Saturday, leading the Braves (26-10, 8-3 MVC) to a 2-0 victory against Missouri Valley Conference leader Missouri State (26-13, 9-2 MVC) at Dozer Park.

Janssen (4-0), who threw 72 pitches and exited with the lead in Tuesday's 5-4 victory at Illinois, struck out a career-best 10 and allowed only just two hits in his 6.2 innings of scoreless work Saturday.  Jeremy Eierman singled with one out in the first inning, but after Braves catcher Keaton Rice threw Eierman out trying to steal second, Janssen retired 18 in a row before surrendering a second hit.

Bradley started the game by loading the bases with no outs against Missouri State hurler Logan Wiley (5-4).  Luke Shadid scored on a Derek Bangert fielder's choice ground ball, but the Braves were unable to scratch across any more runs against Wiley until the seventh inning, when a pair of Missouri State errors set up Ian Kristan's pinch-hit sacrifice fly.

The two runs were all the Bradley pitching staff needed, though the shutout did not come without stress.

Missouri State DH Drew Millas ended Janssen's streak with a 2-out double in the seventh and the Bears finally chased Bradley's starter when Ben Whetstone followed with a walk.  Alex Gray, who has excelled in long relief for the Braves this season, needed just two pitches to get Matt Brown to foul out to end the threat.

The Bears threatened again in the eighth by starting the frame with consecutive singles.  Gray got John Privitera to line out to first and he caught pinch-hitter Ryan Skainik looking, before his day ended with a 2-out walk to Hunter Steinmetz to load the bases.

Boby Johnson came in to face Eierman and he fanned the All-American shortstop to end the eighth.  After Millas led off the ninth with a single, Johnson retired the final three Missouri State batters on fly balls to secure his fourth save of the year.

The teams have split the first two games in an entertaining series and will play the rubber game Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Dozer Park.
