Game Recap: Volleyball |
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Senior Erica Haslag helped Bradley Volleyball rally from a two-sets-to-none deficit with 15 kills in the third and fourth frames to force a deciding fifth set, but tournament-host Morehead State held on to top the Braves 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 15-8 Friday to conclude the first day of the Eagle Challenge.

Haslag moved into seventh on Bradley's career kills list with a 23-kill effort against Morehead State, notching 15 of her kills in the third (6 kills) and fourth (9 kills) sets.  She passed Bradley Hall of Fame member Jenna Passman (1,164 kills) for seventh in school history and now has 1,176 career kills as she posted her 14th career 20-kill effort.

Freshman Hannah Thompson joined Haslag in double figures and turned in her first career double-double with 17 kills and 17 digs to go with three blocks.  Senior Yavianliz Rosado recorded her fifth 30-dig effort as a Brave to help highlight the Bradley defensive efforts.

Morehead State (2-0 overall) never trailed in the first set, building an 11-point advantage (20-9) on the way to a 25-17 win.

In the second set, Bradley (1-1 overall) trailed by as many as six points before coming back.  The Braves chipped away at what was a 13-7 MSU advantage to eventually pull even at 19-19 on a Thompson block.  The teams would trade points before Haslag broke a 22-22 tie with a kill to put Bradley in front 23-22.  Morehead State answered with three consecutive kills, however, to win the frame 25-23 and take a two-sets-to-none lead.

Haslag and Thompson took over for Bradley offensively in the third set with the pair combining for 11 kills.  In a set which featured seven ties and five lead changes, Bradley would make a late push.  With Morehead State hanging on to a 21-19 lead, Thompson tied things up at 21-21 with back-to-back kills and Haslag added two more kills of her own to give the Braves a 23-21 edge.  With Bradley holding a 24-23 advantage, Haslag's sixth kill of the set closed out a 25-23 BU win and forced a fourth set.

Bradley built a 20-14 lead in the fourth as sophomore Emma Raleigh capped a 3-0 Bradley spurt with an ace.  Morehead State wouldn't go quietly, however, pulling within two points on several occasions down the stretch.  Haslag came up big in the closing moments to give Bradley set point at 24-21 with her ninth kill of the stanza.  A Morehead State attack error sealed a 25-21 BU victory as the teams went to a deciding fifth frame.

The Braves were unable to carry that momentum in the fifth set as Morehead State opened with a 5-1 spurt and the Eagles held on for a 15-8 win to take the match in five sets.

Bradley will close out play at the Eagle Challenge Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against St. Francis (N.Y.).
