Volleyball Sweeps Hampton In Season Opener

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Bradley Volleyball made quick work of its season-opening opponent, sweeping Hampton 25-18, 25-15, 25-8 Friday afternoon to open up play at the Eagle Challenge. The Braves hit .302 in the match and served up nine aces in the team's first season-opening sweep since 2012.

Senior Erica Haslag and freshman Hannah Thompson tied for match-high honors with eight kills each to help lead Bradley (1-0 overall) in the victory. Thompson, who opened the contest with a kill, added three aces and nine digs in her Bradley debut and was one of four newcomers in the starting lineup for the Braves. Joining Thompson in the youth dominated lineup were freshmen Hailey Delacher and Kat Poore along with sophomore transfer Sara Maddox.

In the opening set, Poore broke a 9-9 tie with a kill and Thompson served up a pair of aces to highlight a 7-0 BU spurt which gave the Braves a 16-10 advantage. Hampton would pull within four points at 22-18, but back-to-back kills by Thompson and Haslag set up set point at 24-15 and Thompson's third ace of the opening frame closed out the 25-18 BU victory.

After hitting .143 in the first set, the Braves heated up to .300 in the second. Thompson notched four of her eight kills in the second to help lead the Bradley attack. The Braves jumped out to a 7-1 lead to open the frame with junior Kathryn Graf notching a pair of kills during the opening run. The lead ballooned to 12 (19-7) on a Delacher ace and Bradley cruised to a 25-15 win.

Seven different Braves registered a kill during the third set as Bradley won the stanza 25-8 to complete the sweep. With Bradley leading 3-2, Haslag had a kill and a Hampton error gave the Braves a two-point cushion at 5-2. Bradley's lead was three (6-3), when the Braves rattled off eight consecutive points. Maddox got things going with a kill and Thompson capped the run with a kill of her own to help the Braves extend the lead to 14-3.

A 7-1 BU surge would close out a 25-8 third-set win for the Braves. Haslag followed a Hampton service error with a kill and senior Abby Ihrke had an ace to give Bradley a 20-7 edge. Graf and Thompson combined for a block and kills by freshman Lilly Johnson and Graf made it a 23-7 BU advantage. A Hampton kill stopped a 5-0 Bradley run, only to have Thompson's eighth kill of the match set up match point (24-8). Senior Hanna Alexander's ace, which was the ninth of the match for the Braves, was the final point in the victory. Bradley hit a blistering .571 in the third set, notching 12 kills with no errors on just 21 attacks.

Senior Yavianliz Rosado had 12 digs to lead Bradley defensively, while Graf added five blocks to go with her six kills. The Braves had a 40-38 advantage in digs and forced 23 Hampton attack errors, while holding the Pirated to an .062 attack percentage in the match and.034 hitting over the final two sets.

Bradley continues play at the Eagle Challenge later today with a 6 p.m. (CDT) matchup against tournament-host Morehead State.
