Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Gabi Haack tied for game-high honors with 18 points and junior Chelsea Brackmann turned in her Missouri Valley Conference-leading eighth double-double of the year, but Missouri State handed Bradley Women's Basketball a 68-56 loss Friday night at Renaissance Coliseum.

Haack reached double figures in scoring for the 14th consecutive game, tossing in 13 points in the second half, and hit three three-pointers in the game as she moved into seventh in career three-point makes at Bradley (12-4 overall, 2-3 MVC).  She passed Erika Grogg (1990-94) for seventh on BU's all-time three-pointers list, pushing her career total to 114.

Brackmann notched her third double-double in the last four outings, finishing with 12 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high six steals.  She is the first Bradley player to collect six or more steals while also turning in a double-double in a game since Lora Weber 15 points, 12 boards and six steals against Evansville on Jan. 24, 2002.

"They (Missouri State) are a very physical team," said Bradley head coach Andrea Gorski.  "We sent them to the free throw line too many times tonight.  It was a super physical game and it's hard to win when you send the other team to the line as much as we did."

Bradley got off to a slow start offensively, shooting 23.5 percent in the first quarter and 25 percent (9-for-36) in the first half.  Missouri State (8-7 overall, 4-0 MVC) scored the first seven points of the night on 3-of-5 shooting, but made 3-of-11 the remainder of the first quarter.  The Bears held a 15-9 after the opening period.

The Braves trailed 22-17 in the second after Brackmann assisted a Vanessa Markert hoop before Missouri State took control with a 12-0 run.  Alexa Willard started the run with a basket and scored seven points during the spurt which put the Bears out front 34-17.  Bradley trailed 37-24 at the half.

Missouri State kept the lead in double digits throughout the third quarter, despite Bradley shooting 42.9 percent in the stanza and the Bears shooting just 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) in the third.

The deficit was 58-42 when Bradley made a push.  Haack got things started with a three-pointer and freshman Ellie Spelhaug followed a pair of Missouri State free throws with a three of her own.  Another three-pointer from freshman Lasha Petree pulled the Braves within nine at 60-51 with just under five minutes to play.

Missouri State pushed the lead back to double digits (63-51) with three free throws over the next minute, however.  A three-point play by Haack with 2:30 on the clock put the margin back at nine (63-54), but the Braves scored just two points down the stretch as the Bears held off Bradley for the 68-56 victory to extend their win streak to seven games.

Bradley recovered to shot 40.6 percent from the field in the second half.

Missouri State outrebounded the Braves 49-38 and shot 41.7 percent for the night.  Willard tied Haack for game-high honors with 18 points to pace four Bears in double figures.

The Braves close out a two-game MVC home stand Sunday with a 2 p.m. matchup against Southern Illinois at Renaissance Coliseum.
