CHICAGO – Senior goalkeeper Nathan Wisbey stopped an early penalty kick attempt, junior forward Gerit Wintermeyer scored twice for the second consecutive game and head coach Jim DeRose earned his 250th career win as third-seeded Bradley (8-6-4) downed No. 6 seed Evansville (2-15-1), 2-0, in frigid conditions Friday evening in the second quarterfinal of the 2019 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship at Loyola Soccer Park.
After completing the first-ever three-game sweep of the same opponent in a season in program history, Bradley advances to take on No. 2 seed and tournament host Loyola Chicago in Friday's second semifinal game, slated for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Loyola Soccer Park.  In Wednesday's other quarterfinal game, No. 4 seed Drake rallied for a 2-1 win against No. 5 seed Valparaiso in double overtime.  The Bulldogs will take on regular-season champion and ninth-ranked Missouri State in Friday's 1 p.m. semifinal.  The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at Loyola Soccer Park.

The first 20 minutes of the game featured plenty of back-and-forth action before Evansville was awarded a penalty kick in the 22nd minute of a scoreless affair.  Jesse Stafford-Lacey fired toward the left post, where Wisbey made a diving stop, knocking the attempt wide to keep the Purple Aces off the board.

Ironically, the Braves were awarded a PK of their own minutes later when senior midfielder Jack Lang was taken down in the Bradley box.  Wintermeyer, who started Bradley's scoring in Saturday's regular-season finale against Evansville with a penalty kick conversion, buried this attempt, too, with a strong blast into the upper right corner.

Despite a game that saw the teams combine for 24 shots, 13 by the Braves, the score remained unchanged until the 89th minute, when Bradley was awarded a free kick near midfield.  Jack Douglas knocked the free kick deep into the Evansville defensive end, where Lang dug out the ball from an Evansville defender along the right end line.  Lang quickly centered the ball for Wintermeyer, who buried the uncontested shot for the deciding insurance goal.

With his two goals Wednesday, Winteremeyer, the reigning College Soccer News National Player of the Week, now has scored Bradley's last five goals, including three game-winners.  Already ninth in Bradley history for goals scored, now 23, Wintermeyer also moved into ninth place in program history with 53 career points, while moving into a tie for fourth with nine career game-winning tallies.

Including his PK stop, Wisbey made five saves to earn his eighth shutout of the season.  A fifth-year senior who is in his first full year as Bradley's No. 1 keeper, Wisbey now boasts nine shutouts in 19 career starts to quickly climb into a tie for eighth among Bradley's all-time keepers.

DeRose is in his 24th season as Bradley's head coach and improves to 250-190-54 (.561) in his career with the Braves.  The second-winningest coach in MVC men's soccer history, Wednesday's win guaranteed Bradley its third consecutive winning season and 16th winning season overall in his 24 years.  Averaging 10.4 wins per season, DeRose now is responsible for 83.1 percent of the program's 301 wins in its 33 years of NCAA Division I existence.

In The Valley's new, double round-robin schedule format, Bradley and Loyola Chicago played to a pair of scoreless draws during the regular season.
