SAN ANTONIO – Senior LF Dan Bolt was 3-for-4 and sophomore 1B Connor O'Brien also reached base safely three times with a home run and a double, but it was not enough to overcome a big second inning by host Incarnate Word Saturday night.  The Cardinals (2-0) scored five runs in the second en route to an 11-4 win against Bradley (0-2) to secure the series win in the opening weekend of the college baseball season.

Bradley will try to salvage the final game of the 3-game series Sunday, when the teams meet for the 1 p.m. finale at Sullivan Field.

UIW struck for eight runs in the first two innings and took advantage of an erratic effort by a quartet of Bradley pitchers.  Making his Bradley debut, junior RHP Matt Hamilton (0-1) suffered the loss by allowing five runs on three hits and three walks in 1.1 innings.  Troy Hickey (two walks in 3.1 IP), Taylor Catton (three in 2.1 IP) and Ryan Hodgett (one in 1.0 IP) combined to allow six more walks.

After the Cardinals touched Hamilton for three runs in the first inning, Bradley answered with two runs in the second, beginning with O'Brien's leadoff home run.  Freshman DH Peter Hansen added a RBI single in his first career at bat later in the inning to pull the Braves to within 3-2.

The momentum swing was short-lived, however, as UIW scored five runs in the bottom of the second, benefitting from two hits, two walks, two hit-by-pitches and two stolen bases against Hamilton and Hickey in the inning.

Bolt, O'Brien and junior RF Eli Rawlinson all doubled in the fifth inning to pull the Braves within 8-4, but Bradley would get no closer.

Senior SS Luke Shadid saw his 7-game hitting streak come to an end by going 0-for-3, but he did reach base safely twice with a walk and a hit by pitch.  Hansen reached safely three times in his first career game, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
