EDWARDSVILLE, IL – A left-footed strike by Rasmus Smidtslund in the 73rd minute proved to be the difference as No. 6 seed Bradley Soccer defeated the No. 3 seed SIU Edwardsville for the third time this season Tuesday night at Korte Stadium to advance to the semifinals of the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship.
Bradley's first visit to Korte Stadium was a wild affair, with the Braves rallying for a 4-3 win in two overtimes Sept. 25, but Tuesday's MVC Tournament first-round match had a much more defensive feel.  Bradley (5-11-1, 4-7-0 MVC) had only two shots in the opening half, while the Cougars (6-10-2, 4-6-2 MVC) managed just five in the scoreless first half.

The second half had far more action. In the 54th minute, Danny Collins sent one into the back of the net after a scrum in front for the game's first goal. The goal was his second of the season.

The excitement was short lived, though, as SIUE tied the game just two minutes later on a goal by Harvey Moyes.

In the 73rd minute, Smitslund punched one after assists from Pepe Mellado and Jared Sinnaeve. The goal was Smitslund's first of the season and it could not have come in a more crucial moment as it proved to be the game winner.

Bradley held off several late attempts from the Cougars before clinching the victory, marking the second time in as many tries that the Braves have swept a 3-game season series dating back to Evansville in 2019.

The Braves will be back in action Friday in Springfield, MO by facing regular-season Valley champion and 11th-ranked Missouri State on its home field at Allison South Stadium.  Friday's 6 p.m. game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
